`South Park' Creators Skewer Own Network

NEW YORK - Banned by Comedy Central from showing an image of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, the creators of "South Park" skewered their own network for hypocrisy in the cartoon's most recent episode.

The comedy — in an episode aired during Holy Week for Christians — instead featured an image of Jesus Christ defecating on President Bush and the American flag.

In an elaborately constructed two-part episode of their Peabody Award-winning cartoon, "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker intended to comment on the controversy created by a Danish newspaper's publishing of caricatures of Muhammad. Muslims consider any physical representation of their prophet to be blasphemous.

If they showed Jesus defecating on anything they made fun of him.

I actually appreciate that they managed to insult Jesus, the President and the Flag at the same time

They also managed to drag "Family Guy" and "The Simpsons" into it. Great two-part episode, except for the editing caused by Comedy Central/Viacom's cowardice and lack of regard for free speech.

Technically, they showed a cartoon defecating. There was no mention it was Jesus, only assumed in the eyes of the beholder.

Have you ever watched the show?

I am a 46 year old mother of two, Catholic and a ginger to boot! I never miss an episode. The White House Press Conference in last nights episode was about the funniest thing I have ever seen.

"MRPRESIDENTMRPRESIDENT!!!!"
"Yes, you..."
"And what exactly is this '1st Amendment?'"
"You know... the right to free speech..."
"AAAAAAGH!!!!! MRPRESIDENTMRPRESIDENT!!!!"

The whole point was to demonstrate that Comedy Central would allow a defamation of Christ, the President and the Flag, but not even show a picture of mohammed.

I don't see how else they could have proved that point so dramatically.

>>>> That's your judgement. They do social commentary through cartoons. The topics are in your face and not for the faint of heart. Most people in their late 40's and above don't care for them.

I'm in my early 40's and I usually laugh very hard at South Park. The "Ginger Kid" episode even made my wife laugh out loud. She finally saw the sarcasm in the show.

I don't know that age has that much to do with it - my mom is in her 50s and she thinks the show is hilarious - her favorite character is Butters. Mindset matters a lot more than physical age.

While Comedy Central banned a depiction of Mohammed, they did show Jesus pooping. Some religions are more equal than others.

This episode was less about Muhammad and more about CC pulling the trapped in the closet rerun. Matt and Trey already showed Muhammad 4 or 5 years ago in the super best friends episode.

And some have followers who are far less tolerant and far more humorless than others. Have any of the so-called defendes of Islam ever stopped to think how their irrational behavior makes them look to others?

Subsittute Swift for 'Stone and Parker' and you'd have a statement made by various uptights since the 1710s.

That damned Elvis Presley and his hypnotic swiveling hips and the devils rock and roll are going to turn our kids in juvenile delinquents.

"When their contract with Comedy Central expires, Matt Stone and Trey Parker should tell Viacom to screw off and release new, completely uncensored South Park episodes online. Under the circumstances, I'm sure many people who download television shows for free would pay for them."

They might not be able to. If Comedy Central owns South Park, then Stone and Parker wouldn't be able to go anywhere else with it.

They could always move on to something else though. It's been a long time since they created South Park, and their humor has changed a lot since then. It could be interesting to see what they could do in a fresh series.

Welcome to FR Chef.

I think it was about the whole censoring debacle - scientology, mohammed, bloody mary - all of them.

Like Kyle says, either run 'em all or run none.

Maybe Matt & Trey are ready to break from CC?

What?

Are you saying that Jesus never went #2? What did he just urinate all day? Did he ever eat solid food? What about the loaves and the fishes? Or was he such a divine being that he was created without an excretory system?

I guess I am secure enough in my faith to be able to laugh a bit at some satire.

Did you see the episodes? I watched them with the family, and we were laughing our asses off.

Lighten up, Francis.
