MY FATHER DIED -- WWII VET AND MARVELOUS DAD
Vanity | 6 April 2006 | Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin

Posted on 04/06/2006 10:50:24 AM PDT by MeneMeneTekelUpharsin

My dad died yesterday. He just quit breathing. We have been working with him in home hospice for quite some time and making him comfortable in the process. He didn't suffer excessively. My dad was a wonderful man and we ALL are happy and overjoyed for him at the same time we sorrow. He worked his whole life to teach the Gospel to the unbelieving and did so with complete diligence and faith. We have absolutely no doubt he is in Paradise awaiting the day of Judgement.

He taught me so many things much of which has been expressed here on Free Republic. I haven't always been the most congenial personality like he was. Dad was a WWII Navy veteran on a troop carrier in the Pacific theatre. Men like him fought and died so we can have the nation we have. I brought my flag to school today, I took down the Mexican flag (I teach Spanish) and proudly put the United States flag in its place (both are large flags) and informed the students that today -- that flag was going to hang on that wall the entire day in honor of the men who fought and died for this nation and it was going to stay there -- no matter what.

The most important thing the man taught me was to learn the truth and then stand up for it -- no compromise. I try to fulfill that desire he had for us every day I live. May God bless all of you -- we're going to need it soon.

All mankind is of one author and is one volume;
when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book,
but translated into a better language;
and every chapter must be so translated.
God employs several translators;
some pieces are translated by age, some by sickness,
some by war, some by justice;
but God's hand is in every translation,
and his hand shall bind up all our scattered leaves again for that library where every book shall lie open to one another.

--John Donne

I know how you must feel -- my dad, a WWII vet and also very conservative, died 2 years ago and it still hurts.

We're losing so many of our WWII vets, to whom we owe so much.

Good for you for putting up the flag at your school in honor of your dad and all the others who fought for our freedom.

My dad, another proud WWII vet (ETO) passed away last summer. His body began failing him a number of years ago and we too were sorry, yet comforted by his passing.

Time is the only healer for that hole left in your heart. My prayers are with you and your family.

So sorry for your loss but understand your situation. WW2 vet and POW Dad passed in 1996. Mom, in much the same situation as your dad, passed 4 weeks ago. The generation that is swiftly leaving us left many of us with a great moral foundation. Many in our generation left behind our parents philosophy for a complete hedonistic point of view. Happily, many of our children are coming back to their roots and are, unselfishly, taking responsibility for the betterment of our country. May your dad rest in peace; he has certainly earned it.

What a beautiful and comforting passage -- thanks.

I was at a VA Hospital today getting a physical and was getting my blood drawn and an elderly gentleman was in the seat beside me and had a "Retired Marines" hat on....the fellow who was drawing the blood inquired as to where and when he was in the Marines and was he a WWII vet. The ole boy replied...well yes I started out in the Phillipines in 1941...and ended up in Japan in 1946....or some words to that effect....as a guest of the Japanese government....

I am always in awe of being in the presence of hero's like that. Makes my experiences so pale in comparison..

While death may not be unexpected, it still is difficult to deal with.

God bless you and your dad.

Rejoice in the fact that your father was a true fighter for freedom. Rejoice in the fact that he served honorably.

You have big shoes to fill; I'm sure you'll wear them proudly.
