"We ship around a million servers a year," said Judy Chavis, Dell's director of business development for enterprise products.
"Of those about 20 per cent end up running Linux. That 20 per cent need systems to allow easy and quick management of hardware and software."

Is SuSe that much better than Red Hat? It seems they are getting more support from the Big Server Manufacturers or is this a good ole boy lets prop Novell up type thing?

Remember the show M*A*S*H? Ever see the episode about Five-0'Clock-Charlie? That's who he reminds me of.
Everyone there set up lawn chairs to watch the show, knowing full well he'd never score a direct hit on anything...

Wonder how this will affect RedHat Unfortunately, I am not an expert on this subject such as you are N3WBI3, what's your feeling on this? Can you give those of us who are Linux-Challenged some input into what this means and why it is so significant?

That is a terrific analogy. I don't agree with it too much, but it is funny!!!

Right now Dell only sells RedHat Linux with there servers (aside from Windows). I tend to advise people against buying RedHat software from dell and go right to RedHat because the support is a little less of a pain
Just like with windows Dells first questions are always about Drivers and Upgrades, RedHat tackles the problem first and if an upgrade is required then they will then recommend it. But I'm just some guy out there in cyberspace so the fact I would recommend this path may not mean RedHat does not make some bucks from people buying through Dell..
RedHat is right now the #1 vendor of Linux in the world in terms of dollars. Novell, due to their purchase of Suse, is a measurably distant number two. But Novell has been doing some good things with Suse so there should be a tightening in the race over the next few years..

Dell's support sucks.
I once called in a problem about a PC that would not power up, and the Apu on Duty requested I flash up the BIOS. Dell's response is always "your bios is out of date." I asked him how to do that when the PC would not power up, and he had to escalate the call. I guess the answer wasn't in the script.

This isn't big news. Dell Buys Alienware is! Bingo. But don't interrupt their orgy.

"better" is a very subjective topic. I happen to think it's better, I've never used anything so easy to administer.
Keep in mind, YAST could use some serious improvements, but it's by far the easiest one-stop control panel I've ever used.
My previous distro was fedora.
