MOUNTLAKE TERRACE - A Tacoma woman is in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center after being mauled by a pit bull Friday afternoon.
Mountlake Terrace Police Chief Scott Smith said the woman in her 60s was walking by an apartment complex on 212th Street when the dog jumped over a small deck fence and attacked her.
"It was really awful," said Kathryn Goddard, who saw the attack. The dog "just wouldn't let go and kept shaking the lady."
Kathryn's mom, Dawn Goddard, also saw it happen. "I looked down right below my window and was watching this dog chewing on this woman's head," she said.
Smith said the dog dragged the woman about 50 feet down a hill and was clawing at and biting her head and legs for several minutes.
Dawn said the dog's owner was frantically trying to get control of the pit bull. "She was beating on the dog, she was doing everything she could possibly do to get that dog off of this other woman," she said. "That dog was not going to listen to anyone or any thing."
A resident in the apartment complex called 911 and police arrived and managed to distract the dog and get it to stop biting the woman.
But when the dog charged at police an officer shot the dog once. "Clearly this dog was going to attack the officer," Smith said. "So the officer did shoot the dog."
The dog ran back to its owner, who was able to get the pit bull on a leash, but Smith said the dog then began attacking the owner.
Snohomish County animal control officers arrived and took the dog to a veterinarian where it was euthanized after the owner gave permission.
The dog's owner was taken to a local hospital to be treated for bites. Smith said the woman who was attacked and dragged was expected to recover from her injuries and would be spending the night at Harborview in Seattle.
The pit bull was about two years old, and Smith said there were no previous reports of problems with the animal.
You are absolutely correct about that one. :^)
My first dog was a Boston, a male named Bobo. I was about ten years old. My daughters insisted upon getting a Boston based upon photos of Bobo several years ago, and now we are once again hooked on them. We have four among us. Great breed. Very entertaining.
Bostons are a trip and a half. Janey's best buddy in puppyhood was a Boston, and he was a total sweetheart.
You may want to take a look at the below video - it has a very Boston moment.

A friend of mine had a pittbull. Here is what he says to people that have them and think they will never turn vicious.
Mine cost me over $15,000. I used to say the dog was gentle as a kitten, would never hurt anyone. Then it attacked an 8 year old girl. She was not hurt bad but the dog pit her face and the $15,000 was for the bill to fix the scare. Had I not gotten to the dog, it would have kept attacking her. She did nothing to provoke it. I shot the dog myself.
Of course, I paraphrase. But that is pretty darn close to the way he put it when I raised my objections about pittbulls. I did not even know he had had one.
The only way to be a proper owener of a pittbull is not to have them in a neighborhood. That's because it would be cruel to keep it chained up 24 hours a day.
The dogs are like a time bomb. You never know when or why they go off. You are a fool if you do not know that.
It has nothing to do with the owner. Every pittbull attack story has a quote, "gee, it was such a nice dog. I never would have believed it would bite that little boy/girl, chew off their nose, ear and half their cheek, all while I was beating it over the head with a hammer. Really, I did everything I could to stop it."
Ban all Pittbulls! No, correction. Kill them all.
Yes you do. They go off when they assume the roll of pack leader. NO dog, regardless of breed, should ever be allowed to become the pack leader. No chaining necessary.
Funny how people without a legitimate retort to an argument will (1) try to asign a position to the opposition that that the opposition does not hold or (2) try to paint the opposition as having a phobia.
Because you support Pitbull ownership should I suggest that you are afraid of Gay people. Your argument makes as much sense as that.
Please, we are on FR. You are not supposed to argue like a liberal.
Next time you see the dog, throw it a nice hamburger with all the proper ingrediants. Solve your problem now.
Yea, great idea. The kid with his face chewed off will be real comforted knowing the owner of the dog has insurance for the reconstructive surgery.
True - unload on the dog.
You're right, I was out of line....I apologize.
You're right. I was out of line, I apologize.
You missed the point but that was expected. High premiums would cut down on the number of people owning such dogs and those who did would be buying pure bred stock lines not bred for fighting.
Ah, I have days like that myself... no hard feelin's.

You'd think by now people would know a camel's nose under the tent when they saw one.
P.s. the only dog i've ever been bitten by was a pomeranian
Please be careful.

"Sure, but why stop at pitbulls. Let's ban Rottweilers, German Shepards and Dobermans also...and don't forget the Mastiffs and Rhodesian Ridgeback. I've also heard Jack Russell terriers are vicious as heck...."
One less Jack Russell to worry about:

The Pit also killed a Rottweiler Shepherd mix during the same attack...impressive.
