Cruise's Hubbard hubbub
The Sun (U.K.) ^ | 3/3/06 | Staff

TOM Cruise wants to call his new baby Hubbard — after the founder of his wacky Scientology religion, L Ron Hubbard.

But the actor, 43, faces opposition from fiancée Katie Holmes, 27 — due to give birth in weeks.

An insider said former Catholic Katie, who converted to Scientology, is concerned at being “a laughing stock”.

Shouldn't the baby get the real dad's last name?

No it won't....the child will be raised by Scientologists....they will worship baby Hubbard. If Katie tries to interfere she will be taunted as Old Mother Hubbard who lives in a cupboard and kids will throw dog bones at her.

I feel rather sorry for little Katie...so young, to be drawn into all this.

Does she still have to give birth the Scientology way, now that they are separated? Besides naming a child Hubbard, not being to hold a baby right after birth is the next wierd thing going on here.

I'm smelling a potential lawsuit. The baby will eventually be nicknamed Hubby, and if he is overweight, Chubby Hubby. I know first hand that Ben and Jerry's do not take kindly to copyright infringement...

Katie is not married. She is pregnant. Sounds like the final decison to name the baby will be hers.

I dunno - L. Ron Turkeybaster isn't much of an improvement.

This is from star magazine so I gotta wonder.. is there any truth to this? Do they really leave newborns alone for a day or so? yikes..

Issue 1: Will Katie be separated from her baby?
In Scientology, mother and child are separated for days after birth to reduce trauma and provide time to recover, says a source. The mother is discouraged from holding or cuddling the child. "The baby should not be bathed or chilled but should be wrapped somewhat tightly in a warm blanket, very soft, and then left alone for a day or so," Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote in a Dec. 20, 1958, bulletin titled "Processing a New Mother." "Katie has said she is not willing to do that," says a Scientologist friend of Tom, "so Tom will probably agree." Even though it's in black and white, a rep for Tom denies that Scientology calls for any separation.

Issue 2: No Painkillers
"A qualified doctor or midwife can be present at the baby's birth," says a source, "but the person is usually a Scientologist, and the use of drugs or painkillers is discouraged." This means Katie will have a completely natural delivery, which leads to the next sticking point...

Issue 3: No screaming allowed
According to Sci-Ti dictates, women aren't supposed to scream about the pain of giving birth, so the child can greet the world in a serene setting. Music is also not allowed. Says a source,"Katie will be able to moan, but she cannot say anything, especially anything negative about the pain or the experience. In fact, no one in the room is supposed to talk. A silent birth is about creating a calming, soothing, quiet environment during childbirth," according to a Scientology spokesperson.
