The cute blonde girl was soaked with fish juice. "This is the worst thing I've ever done!"

I'm glad the geeks are gone....they spent more time kissing and telling each other they love one another than planing their trips..

Italy is one of the two or three best countries I've ever been to, though in all my trips I've never been south of Naples. The food is great, the females lovely, most everyone is friendly and there is a great deal to see.

Yup, you're the only one. :-)

I don't really have a favorite - the hips are funny. Wonder how many pairs of red pants they brought. Seems like that's all they wear.

Am I the only one that likes Lake & Michelle? They're growing on me.

No, they are actually my favorite team. They are the most entertaining of all the teams. It seems that they tried to typecast Lake as the overbearing husband, but I just think he is hyper. He can be annoying, but Michelle keeps him in line. They make me laugh, so I hope they stay in it a while. Others who are supposedly funny, are not, IMO.

Sicily is cheaper than the rest of Italy, but has many beautiful parts. When I went there, I spent the week in Palermo (which I don't recommend) and took day trips out. I wish we had spread out a little more, because we missed Segesta and a few more places I wanted to visit.

Episode 6: Siracusa, Italy

FRAT BOYS ON FIRE; NERDS DON’T RULE

As Teams drove through the quaint towns of Sicily, “frat boys” Eric & Jeremy continued to set the pace with their third win in five attempts. A fish Detour caused Monica to break down crying, but in the end, dating couple Dave & Lori couldn’t catch up in gridlock morning traffic becoming the fifth Team eliminated from THE AMAZING RACE.

FRIENDLY RIVALRY

Departing the Pit Stop in first place at 2:29 am, best friends BJ & Tyler ripped open their clue that instructed them to drive 135 miles to Catania, Sicily and find Antiteatro Romano, the ruins of a 2,000-year-old amphitheater. On their rivals Eric & Jeremy, Tyler noted, “The frat guys are nice guys, but we feel this is more our game than their game. We’ve done a lot of traveling and we have a lot of experience in situations like this.” BJ added, “They’re definitely dumb, but people who are very dumb wind up having the best luck. But eventually dumb luck runs out.”

Departing almost two hours later, friends Eric & Jeremy had plenty to say about BJ & Tyler as well. Jeremy noted, “As a valet and waiter, we haven’t traveled the world as much as the hippies.” Eric added, “We’re learning as we go. I think we’re doing a pretty good job of it.” The friends also remarked, “The funny thing is when we all get together they just run happily with smiles behind us, little pixie dust flying everywhere. It’s no fun for us.”

Arriving at the Antiteatro Romano in Catania before the sun came up, best friends BJ & Tyler encountered a locked gate that would not open until 8:30 am. Deciding to have a little fun, the pair created a fake sign-up sheet, wrote their names on it, and placed it on the gate before returning to their car for some sleep. As dawn broke, friends Eric & Jeremy arrived at the gate, somewhat puzzled by the sign-up sheet as BJ & Tyler snickered while watching them from their car. Soon realizing the sheet was fake, Eric & Jeremy laughed at the joke along with BJ & Tyler.

SOMETHING SMELLS FISHY

When the gates of the Antiteatro Romano opened at 8:30 am, friends Eric & Jeremy and BJ & Tyler raced to the clue box where they learned they had to count the statue heads on the fence posts that surround the grounds of amphitheater. After counting them, the Teams needed to search the amphitheater for the groundskeeper that would hand them their next clue if they correctly tallied the number of heads.

As the two Teams went in opposite directions around the perimeter of the amphitheater, they both attempted to throw off each other’s head count by shouting out random numbers when they ran past each other. This tactic didn’t work for either one as both Teams reached a count of 41 that they delivered to the groundskeeper for their next clue, a Detour. In this Detour, Teams had to choose between Big Fish and Little Fish. In Big Fish, each Team member needed to pick up a 32 pound swordfish and walk through the mazelike streets of Catania one third of a mile to a market called Storico la Pescheria, where a local fish vendor named Jagino would hand them their next clue. In Little Fish, Teams would travel directly to the same market, Storico la Pescheria, where they would take over a stall and sell four kilos of a small Sicilian fish called Triglia.

Friends Eric & Jeremy opted to carry the big fish through the streets of Catania and discovered they had hippies in hot pursuit when best friends BJ & Tyler, unsure of what to do, chose to follow Eric & Jeremy’s lead. While the guys easily handled the weight of the fish, each needed to adjust to the smell and texture of it. BJ remarked, “I feel like I’m holding a wet cat, “ while Jeremy added, “Oh my gosh, it’s puking on me.” Arriving at the market, the two Teams searched for Jagino with Eric & Jeremy again leading the way. After delivering the fish, the two Teams opened their clue to learn they had to drive over 40 miles to Siracusa and find Ponte Umbertino. After the Teams agreed to follow each other to Siracusa, friends Eric & Jeremy quickly ditched their rivals to gain an early lead leaving Catania.

NO MORE TEARS

While walking through the streets of Catania with their large fish, dating couple Joseph & Monica had some ventriloquism fun making their fish talk to people. Soon their frivolity turned to frustration when they couldn’t find the correct vendor in the market. Her arms red from the fish, Monica began crying as Joseph shouted, “Jagino!” Seeing married couple Fran & Barry quickly selling fish didn’t help the situation. After asking countless vendors, the couple still couldn’t locate Jagino and Monica continued crying because she couldn’t carry the fish any longer. Finally, a local pointed them in the right direction just as Joseph began to lose his cool, saying, “I’m going to stab one of these locals through the head.” After receiving their clue and running off, Fran & Barry sold their fourth kilo to complete the Detour as well.

With married parents Lake & Michelle delivering the fish, a battle for last place began heating up between dating couples Ray & Yolanda and Dave & Lori, both stuck in the early morning gridlock traffic. Traffic proved to be so bad that Ray & Yolanda opted to park their car and just walk to the amphitheater to save time. Keeping their slim lead on Dave & Lori, Ray & Yolanda began delivering their fish as the other couple finished counting heads. On the way to Siracusa, Yolanda remarked, “We gotta hurry at this point.” Still in last place, Dave & Lori bought a map to ensure they wouldn’t get lost.

KRAZY KAYAKS

Driving into Siracusa in first place, friends Eric & Jeremy parked at Ponte Umbertino and encountered a Roadblock. In this Roadblock, one Team member had to perform in a popular Italian sport, kayak polo. To do this, they would work solo in a kayak and join a professional team and participate in an ongoing match. After scoring one goal for their team, they would receive their next clue.

Jumping into a kayak for the yellow team, Jeremy got off to a shaky start by running into another teammate’s kayak. Once he got his hands on the ball, Jeremy found his kayak instantly swarmed by opposing red kayaks and he missed the shot. With Eric shouting, “Go score, Jeremy, you pansy,” Jeremy did just that, screaming and cheering over his own success. Opening their clue, the friends discovered they had to travel on foot through the streets of Siracusa to Ponte Aretusa, a natural spring and Pit Stop.

As BJ scored a goal of his own, friends Eric & Jeremy stepped on the mat in first place, their third win. For their efforts, they won a cruise for two from Travelocity on the Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas, the world’s largest and most innovative cruise ship. In familiar fashion, best friends BJ & Tyler arrived in second place.

While directions allowed married couple Fran & Barry to arrive at the Roadblock before dating couple Joseph & Monica, Barry’s prowess in the kayak proved to be a liability for his Team. Barry’s missed shots allowed Joseph to pass him, finishing the task first en route to a third place standing. A disappointed Fran remarked on her husband, “He’s pathetic!” However, he eventually made the shot giving him and Fran a fourth place finish.

With Lake having done all of his Team’s Roadblocks up to this point, the time came for Michelle to contribute. Right away, Michelle dropped the ball when passed to her, which allowed the red kayak team to steal it away. When Michelle continually missed the goal, a frustrated Lake tried to coach her from the sidelines, “Throw it one handed! You have to throw it!” After positioning herself closer to the goal, Michelle received a pass from a teammate and gently threw the ball for a score while Lake cheered on the sidelines.

THE END MARKS THE START OF A NEW BEGINNING

As Lake & Michelle stepped onto the mat in fifth place, dating couple Ray & Yolanda arrived at the Roadblock. While Ray initially struggled, even flipping his kayak, he eventually made a great shot to complete the task. Dave made a pretty good shot of his own to keep him and Lori in the running, but in the end, Ray & Yolanda fended them off in a footrace to the Pit Stop to finish in sixth place.

Stepping onto the mat in last place, dating couple Dave & Lori heard the news from Phil that they had been eliminated from THE AMAZING RACE. A teary Lori said, “It’s disappointing to be leaving the Race, but we ran a great Race. We did the best that we could. You can’t ask for anything more. We enjoyed every minute of it.” An introspective Dave added, “[I] already got the prize doing the Race with someone I love dearly. I love Lori with all my heart and you can’t buy that with a million dollars. Hopefully, this adventure will launch our adventure in life together. Nerds rule.”

Me too. At first I thought they were another screaming "Jonathan & Victoriaaaaaaaaa!" couple, but Lake and Michelle are really funny.

Michelle: "Calm down."

Lake: "I'm calm! I'm calm!"

Michelle (unimpressed): "Yeah, this is you calm."

Amen, amen and again, I say Amen! I was screaming at the tv, "put on a shirt with sleeves", my wife just looked at me perplexed.

Darn it. I just lost 90% of my interest in this race. I knew the nerds would lose eventually but... oh well.

I know, I liked them too. Anyone else see this shaping up as a two team race? I just can't see anyone else beating the hipps or frats. Only Lake/Michelle are as competitive as them, but they make too many dumb mistakes.

Agree, the hipps and frats are the best teams, but even excellent teams make stupid mistakes--like picking cab drivers who don't have a clue where they're going. So you really never know.

I like Lake & Michelle too. But basically, I never care who wins the Race. It's the destinations that keep me coming back to see more.

Oh, so true! That, and plain ol' bad luck. I think David and Lori were one of the stronger teams and they hit a string of bad luck and stupid mistakes. It can take anyone out.

But, a lot of times team generate their own bad luck, or compound bad luck and mistakes with additional mistakes. The frats boys have surprised the heck out of me, or they are way lucky. I still think it'll come down to these two teams, with MoJo in the finals, as well.
