According to a history of Christmas traditions article I read a few years back, the trees were originally hung from the ceiling (upside down). Used for utilitarian purposes, food was hung on them to keep it safe from the varmints! That's why cookies, gingerbread men etc are still hung from the trees.
Wish I'd kept that article so the source could be checked.

I have also heard it keeps the trees fresher longer.
But the real question should be whether to buy a real tree or an artificial tree.

Mr sassbox's fraternity did this once. He said they did it because it was the only way to get the tree to fit in the living room of the frat house. Apparently there weren't any smaller sized pine trees at the local office park where some of the brothers went "shopping."

When everyone in the family breaks out in big red welts the decision for an artificial tree is not difficult.
DO love to "look" at the real trees, just can't touch!

Don't the needles fall on the ceiling that way?

I dunno...looks kinda like a decorated 'Festivus' pole to me. I just hate it one holiday morphs into the next...

Looks to me like a way to get rid of funky looking trees that nobody would use "right side up".

there is some Christmas Traditions and Customs site - christmas.indiasever.com/christmas-traditions/index.html
Those upside down trees (the really nice ones) are great, we got one for our family room last year, along with our traditional tree for living room. They have been around for a couple of years, you only see them in small shops

My Festivus Pole looks the same when displayed upside down.
