According to a history of Christmas traditions article I read a few years back, the trees were originally hung from the ceiling (upside down). Used for utilitarian purposes, food was hung on them to keep it safe from the varmints! That's why cookies, gingerbread men etc are still hung from the trees.
Wish I'd kept that article so the source could be checked.

Mr sassbox's fraternity did this once. He said they did it because it was the only way to get the tree to fit in the living room of the frat house. Apparently there weren't any smaller sized pine trees at the local office park where some of the brothers went "shopping."

Looks to me like a way to get rid of funky looking trees that nobody would use "right side up".
