This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I'm back from shopping. One of my stops was Pet Smart to see if I could find a pad like the one I borrowed from my friend. They don't make that type anymore, but I they had the Cashel Pads. I had never seen one. That is what I landed up buying and I think it will be more cushy then the one I borrowed. I'm anxious to try it tomorrow.
Did you know there are three types. a wedge, a flat and a reverse wedge? What type do you have? I'm thinking you have the regular wedge, that is what I got.

I seriously doubt that it's cushing's, but excessive urination is a symptom of it.
I'm gonna beat you with a wet noodle for getting me onto that dang breastfeeding thread. sheesh, there are alot of dumbasses out there.
I have the regular wedge. Fatter in the back than in the front, and I use that with a fuzzy pad.
And it was OK... I am wanting to re-evaluate that, though, before next year's season, to see if the current arrangement is still right for him. I think it's possible that I need to add some pad to the center of the span of the tree, to prevent bridging.
The good news is, now that we have a trailer, we can take him to the saddle shop and have him fitted, instead of the guy having to guess what to bring with him and come out here.
When I googled for excessive urination, all I found was Cushings... and she's way to young for that.

These animals have us trained alright... Our kitty just walks over to the door and starts clawing the carpet. Asking nicely gets him nowhere, I guess, if he ever did try, so he decided "If I go over here and be bad, she'll get up!"
I only question 2 things about it. One I find it hard to believe it stays in place, but you said it did and the lady at the store says they stay. Since I don't seem to have a choice its the only thing I could do. And two, it feels alot like neoprene I wondered how much heat will build up under it. But on the plus side, I actually think it will be more cushy as I don't think it will flatten out as much when I sit on it as the foam did in the pad I am borrowing.
I will do my best tomorrow to do a really long, 3-4 hours, 4mph ride. That should tell me if it works.

I'd use it between your other pad you bought and the saddle, not right up against the horse.
Do that, and they do stay in place.
I've thought about sewing it to the pad, but that's mostly to make it easier to construct when storing and saddling. I don't leave the pad under the saddle when I store it, because that will flatten out the pad at whatever bars the saddle is sitting on. So I take it apart, and the cashell inevitably falls on the floor because there's nowhere good to put it, except on top of the saddle.
Well that is what I was thinking I could do if I have trouble keeping it in place is sew a pocket on that blue pad I bought to slip the cashel into. That is the way the pad I borrowed worked. It was a fluffy white one with a pocket that the foam pad slipped into. It wouldn't be hard to do. But I'll try it without first.

I had to research some plants the other day. One in particular comes to mind. Do you have johnson grass around where your horses can get to it?

Once the saddle is cinched up it's never moved on me. It's just the storage issue that's bothered me.
The first Cashel I had, I let sit under the saddle all winter on my saddle stand, which is wood. In the spring, there was a permanent indent on the cashell from where it rested on the stand, even with only the weight of the saddle on it. So I learned from that, to save it's softness for when I'm in it.
Yeah, it came with some liturature that said not to put anything on top of it when storeing. I've got an ice chest that stays in my trailer under the saddle racks. I can lay it on that.

Post the link to that site, I wanna read it. My horses love Johnson grass and it's hard to even get hay around here that doesn't have it in there. I don't like it in hay because it gets too hard and dry when baled and is like just a bunch of sticks. I didn't know it could have adverse side effects.
I've used those pads all the time, and I've never had one slip out on me, or even move. I call them bounce pads. They work well!

I was suprised to see Johnson grass on there. The horses I used to have loved the stuff. I never knew it was supposed to be bad for them.
where do you live?
If it isn't the salt block you might want to check her sugar.
