The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Good Morning.

Feels so good not to get up and go to work. It's another cloudy, cold day. My truck needs washed so bad. That is on my list of things to do. The old hard drive has to be mailed back to Dell today, or else they will charge me for it. Suppose, I better get cracking.

Can't imagine anymore not haveing this place to come to to talk about all things:)

It's been a busy morning here. I had another bird kill it self on my patio door, so I had to get out and move the feeders. I've tried ptting things in the windows it doesn't seem to help. It's always the Goldfinch that hit it. Right after the one died, another hit it but still flew off. It doesn't seem fair to attract them here then have such and obstacle they can't see. Hopefully moving it further away from the window, will help....

Then I fed and went on my walk. I added a loop today. now my Walks are right at 2400 steps. If anything, I think they are helping Nikki. At the start of last week she couldn't keep up. Today, she not only kept up but one time was running with Susie:). I just hope it's helping me that much, altho I don't think I'm ready to run even for a short distance:)

I'm off to the bank, then Kristy is bringing me JP for the day. I'm changeing my grandkid day to Mon. instead of Fri. I was running into alot of conflicts with Fri. We'll see how Mon. works.

It's a bit cold here today, the wind is from the N. But the sun is shining nice, this afternoon should be bearable outside.

Becky

Good morning, rain and wet here, I feel like Eeyore, "Oh bother, woe is me..."

I've got stalls to clean today, ecurbh and I just said "no" to stalls ALL weekend. So they're bad. But that's OK. I like spending time with him on weekends on stuff that ~isn't~ chores.

Don't run. Bad for your knees. Just keep walking. You'll burn the calories without the leg damage.

. . . you remind me, I have to clean the cat box and "police" the yard. . . . ugh.

For some reason, my mare is a sweetheart about not dirtying her stall. She prefers to "go" outside (I also hot walk her outside after we ride, and she usually "goes" then.) I just pick up the occasional accident and put it in the muck tub, add a shovelful of shavings from time to time.

We do have the lock-together rubber mats under the shavings, and that seems to make cleaning the stalls a whole lot easier. They tilt to a gravel channel outside the back of the barn, so you can actually hose them down and they drain. . . .

LOL...I never really planned on running. I think a walk is almost as good, especially with hills:) But thanks for the tip.

Cute video of Bay and his gals. It looked like Pony sassed him a little bit, then fell right into line. Looks like he runs a tight ship. ;o)

A walk is better, not only because you don't damage the structures of the knee and foot, but also because you can go farther without running out of gas. Just keep extending the distance, and you can also pick up the pace a little as you go (my Lab takes care of that part for me - she wants to RUN!)

I do two miles and four miles on alternate days, except for days when we go to agility class (which is the equivalent of an hour of wind sprints) or hunting retriever training days (where I get my exercise shuttling dead ducks and wingers on foot instead of in the four-wheeler.)

We've got rubber mats, and yes, it makes a world of difference to not be digging through pee-soaked dirt trying to determine when to stop digging. :~D

Bay doesn't poop or pee inside when he has a choice, and he does have a choice, the mares are closed in at night, so the mess is not their fault.

Also do some gentle stretches before you start out. Standing on some steps with your heels over the edge, holding onto the banister, and just gently letting your weight stretch the calf muscles and achilles tendons (NO bouncing please!) is the best thing for walking.

I used to NEVER warm up or stretch -- then I made the mistake of doing some vigorous Scottish Country Dancing at the Highland Games without warming up. My body remembered how, and the music just carries you along, but I was too out of shape to dance on half point for two hours. OUCH! I strained both calf muscles and I couldn't walk straight for a week or so.

He tries to run a tight ship, but they're younger and faster and it's a constant struggle ;~D

...It's a water pouch that you carry like a back pack, not as big. but it has a straw that runs from the pouch and you can drink with out taking it off. It carried 70 ounces of water...

Yeah, I've seen those things, they're really interesting. I think they're called "Camel Backs" or something like that. I just wonder how they go about keeping the water cool, coz otherwise you'd be drinking body-temperature (or hotter) water in no time.

Oh Wow Barb, great to hear about the mare! Prayers answered I think. Hopefully this'll be her last bout with this thing. Great news!

That was a really funny story about the armadillo! I'm really impressed about Harley not freaking out because those little buggers seem to be really scary to most horses. Maybe because they can run so fast and maybe because the brush makes a really weird noise as it scrapes off their shell when they run through it. I'll bet Grizzley was really frustrated when he couldn't get a good tooth-hold on it.

...how that thing was heading right for us and never swerved at all...

I don't think they see very well because they have the same disregard for on-coming cars, as evidenced by the mass quantities of them you find squashed on the road. He probably thought Harley was just another clump of trees.

Thanks. I was supposed to go get her today but the vet said wait until tomorrow just to be sure so I was fine with that.

The vet told me after I load my mare and take her home tomorrow he's going down to Guadalajara to get married!
