This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Hey reminder if you need it, cuz we just talked about it - 24 starts back up next weekend... Two hours Sunday and Two hours Monday.
Hello Hair and everybody. I'm back.
I took Miss Accident-Prone into the vet last Weds. and they cut out her swollen lymph gland as a last resort. Thee different antibiotics didn't work and she had been rrunning a fever and refusing food for nearly three weeks. She was a skeleton. anyway they cut it out and it had extensive roots through out her throat. Now her fever is gone and she is eating heartily.
Looks like she's going to survive. Going to get her tomorrow. It's an 80-mile round trip. Great relief to me.
Wow! Good news! I was wondering how she was doing.
I guess it didn't occur to me that they could just take it out. Any expected affects from losing it?
Hey, thanks, I had no clue it was starting next weekend. I knew it was going to in Jan.
Anyway, back from my ride. The funniest thing happend. While riding down a trail, Grizzly who was up ahead, ran off to the side. The grass and brush were tall enough, that I couldn't see him, but I could tell he was chasing something and they had turned and were heading back towards me. I stopped Harley to watch, and this armadillo came runing out headed right at us. I thought as soon as he got out in the open he'd turn a go a different direction, but he kept heading right for us. I got a good hold on Harley and hoped for the best. The darn thing AND Grizzly went right under his nose and disappeared into the brush on the other side. Harley either didn't care or didn't see him, but I find it hard to believe he didn't see it.
Grizzly kept trying to bite it, but could never get ahold of it because of it's shell. LOL...I went ahead, and in just about 1/2 minute he caught back up. I guess he just gave up:)
It was funny, the way it was head right at us, I just didn't know what way to go to get out of the way, so I just stayed where I was....my heart missed a beat tho:)
Becky
Hey good news:). Will they be able to find the cause from a biopsy?
Becky
I think that would have freaked me out... Glad Harley had more sense :~D I've never been in the presence of an armadillo, but they are a funny little creature!
I haven't seen many live ones:). It's what's amazing about them, is how fast they can move being such awkward looking animals. I was just telling Mack my story, and it's just so hard to explain, how that thing was heading right for us and never swerved at all. I thought for sure I was going to have both of them under the horses legs, but they went under his neck, whew...Maybe Harley wouldn't have done anything, but I'm glad I didn't have to find out:)
Becky
Of course, you should have got a picture ;~D
I've got some pictures of Harley's back after I took the saddle off, but something differnt is going on when I try to post pictures to Snapfish. I think some setting must have gotten changed, I'll have Mack look at it later when he comes in. Anyway, should I worry that the hair under the saddle right behind the withers, seems ruffled up when I take the saddle off. Is that just because his hair is longer and thicker, or would that mean something else. I'm really paranoid now of saddles not fitting, and shoes not being right:). I make my self crazy worrying about this kind of stuff. I really don't know if you'll be able to see what I mean from the pictures anyway.
Becky
Wed site Lance Campers
Even if I'd have had the camera, I don't think there is anyway I could have gotten one. I wasn't letting go of Harley at all:)
Do you ride with your camera turned on the whole time? I've wondered if that would work better then turning it on and off?
Becky
Wow, that's a slide on camper!!!!?????
Becky
Roughed up maybe from the saddle sliding forward after it was put on? I know I put the saddle on forward and slide it back so the hair lies flat, especially when they're in heavy coat. But I dunno... saddle fit is one of the things I obsess over now too. If we can see it in the pics, we'll see.
Heh. I just remember when we saw the bear and got pretty nervous we started away down trail and I said... "NO - dangit! I gotta go back and try to get a piiiiiictuuuuurrrre!"
I don't ride with it on ~all the time~, I take it out for bits, and then put it away for bits, but I do leave it turned on if I am gonna take another picture shortly. And my battery pack on the new camera always holds up for a good day of shooting if it was freshly charged.
Yes, check out the web site link under the picture. Pretty sharp huh? The RV show was nice. So, many sizes and types. Those big big motor homes. Gosh, what layouts. I did notice that so many had such teeny tiny toilet closets. The showers were big, with sink in the bedroom area. Counter space in the kitchens were at a minimum in a lot also.I did get lots of information on campgrounds, in many areas. The Home and Garden show, and outdoor shows will be coming up soon. Those are always so nice to attend also.
I'd like to go to a Home and Garden show.
Becky
Those are unbelieveable.
Becky
Nahhhhhhh:') That's not a camper. It's a house! My Dad was telling me that they have slide and top slide outs too.
Here's pictures of Harley's back. I'm not sure if you'll see what I'm talking about. I do, but I know what I'm looking at.
And, is it a problem that he stay's soooo white right under the saddle, and then seems dirty and sweaty around the edges of it??? Is that typical of a light colored horse?
Becky
Dam, the more I look at that the more I'm wondering if that saddle isn't bridging on him....Where the hair is so light is where I'm talking about it gets ruffled. I put the saddle on forward and slide back to to keep the hair smooth.
On these short rides I've been taking, I haven't been putting the cushion on. Maybe next time I will and see what it looks like when i get back.
