I wish I had a plot. :P
We can be plotless together. *snif*
Maybe it will come to me in a dream.
I'm off to bed, folks.
Nighty night!
You can have my alligators. And I'll throw in the death-ray free.
Night, Ruthy!
Heh...my best NaNo plot so far *did* come to me in a dream. So...ya never know! ;-)
nighty nite Rutheee! :-)
That reminds me... need to invest in UPS systems once we get jobs that pay money, again.
Ouch. Reminds me... I found out during a power blink a little while back that my UPS at home was, in fact, NOT uninterruptible. Bad batteries. Nuts.
Gotta fix that. [sigh]
Yah. Mine did that... right when the power went out. :-)
It was an APC unit too... oh well. I needed a bigger one anyway. That one was just a little 650. Should be a 1500 or so, really.
I think I messed up the 650 while running on the generator. It (the UPS) was cycling crazy, and I had to shut it down. Probly too late.
Only the bigger models are set up to deal with generators. I don't know why, since generator power is technically cleaner and more stable on voltage than utility power.
This site has gone insane.
I'm going to bed.
Agreed. Who would have thought that what you get from spending so much time on the "cutting edge" is "fringe."
And then some.
G'night. I'm hitting the couch.
I didn't know until last year, when Clare told me, that Subaru is the Japanese word for 'The Pleiades', and that's why they have the seven stars in their logo.
One of those things I had just never thought about.
You'll have to figure out how big a generator is needed just to run your freezer (BIG!), how long you can keep the generator running, and how to run it safely.
Before you get to that, there's one relatively inexpensive item that you should have to protect your freezer. It's a power conditioner, and it protects against over and under-voltage.
Under voltage is the bigger threat, because it can burn out a compressor motor without you even knowing it's happening. A power conditioner is like a UPS system without the battery. It smoothes out the power, and adjusts voltage to remain in safe limits.
APC makes one, and I have it on the freezer, just because I think the freezer is more vulnerable than the refrigerator.
This is their biggest (you'll need it), rated for 1200VA and costs about $60. You plug it into the wall, and plug the freezer into it. It also has an alarm if it goes into over or undervoltage protection.
Undervoltage, or brownouts, are the more common problem, especially if power is just being restored, or the power company is having problems.
About the only drawback is that it may pop its breaker if you try to restart the freezer with the lines already under pressure, increasing the power demand over what the conditioner is rated for. Just wait about 30 minutes for the pressure to bleed off, and then plug the freezer back into the conditioner.
I see brownouts as a bigger threat to freezers than power loss. $60 is cheap insurance.
We're thinking of a propane-powered generator to tie into the house tank. It would only run essential circuits. We haven't gotten serious about researching it out, yet.
Was nanoplotting last night and I still need a cool name for an evil henchman. I'd like his last name to be one or two syllables with a very harsh sound like Tom Clancy's Mr. Clark. Nice, hard-sounding name. He's the shadowy figure doing the main villian's dirty work.
I'm also still trying to decide just how insulted I'll choose to be over a post on a Heston thread. Apparently even the slightest swooning over classic actors (Yul Brynner, et al)and their classic roles disqualifies one from 'lady' status and relegates you to a golden-calf worshipping groupie. I'm agahst. This website has gone insane.
That really is a cool item!
I agree...my freezer is more important than my fridge...
I have a battery pack that attaches to my vcrs and HomeSat receiver because it's all set up and programed to record the jedi's classes. It's a hassle to have to re-do.
Monster World
by Joshua
There was all these kids at the beach, one went swimming near the shore. Then this other kid went to a really deep part. Then he just disappeared and never showed up again.
Three boys were driving to a swimming hole. One looks back and sees a monster walking past. And then another kid looked off to the side into the forest and he saw some trees moving!
Later on, they were with their mother driving to the Walmart. They shopped and shopped and shopped. Then they came back to the car and a monster was right behind them! The monster walks up when no one is looking and grabbed the middle one! He was just a little kid!
They went back to the beach and none of them swam because it would be too dangerous.
So they just went there and had fun making sand castles. Then, this boy was making a sand castle and then another one of those monsters grabbed him and pulled him down into the sand!
The mother and the two kids went home to go swimming in their pool but when they were putting on their bathing suits, two monsters came out from out of the cabinet and grabbed the two boys and all that was left was the mother and the father.
The end?
I've heard that somewhere before...
