The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

And I don't have a fear of flying, or an uncontrollable fear of heights, but I'm claustrophobic, sorta.

If I sit on an inside seat in the back of the plane facing forward, and I look up and see all those people coming on board, in between me and the exit, I start to lose it. I begin contemplating crawling over the people between me and the aisle.

If I sit up front, on the aisle, those reactions are much diminished.

If I fly Southwest, and sit on one of the rearward-facing seats, I have no problems at all. NONE.

And the few projects I have headed up haven't been anything important...something like just inventorying a companies computer assets for the first time isn't very impressive when the company is only 50 people or so.

No, Rosie, inventorying those computer assets for the first time was a big deal to the company involved. It's not the size of the project, it's the worth of the project.

Talk about that project, how you set it up, how it was received by the company.

Unggggh...yeah, that bothers me, too. As do most any crowd situations, ESPECIALLY indoors. Anything where I feel like I can't move away quickly.

Worst time I can remember, I went to a youth convention dealie with one brother. It was supposed to be all outdoors, but then a HUGH lightning storm came through, and they crowded us all into the few buildings in the area, which really weren't big enough. I remember standing against a wall trying not to hyperventilate or scream. Took all my concentration.

My brother ended up holding my hand so I wouldn't lose it. As teenagers. No matter how many times he's been irritating since then...I guess I owe him one. ;-)

Yeah, the success doesn't have to be *big*, just meaningful... for instance, it could be a particularly difficult problem on a single computer, that you were able to diagnose and fix. In other words, some success that you took particular satisfaction in achieving.

WOW... but is that ever a good point.

Hey...I could handle those.

I guess for the most part I've been spoiled. I interviewed for two positions when I first got out of the military and another two when I got laid off in 2002. None of those interviews were really, truly bad, and both the ones for the jobs I actually got were actually kinda fun. So...here's hoping the trend continues.

Except...I've interviewed for positions here already, and except for the position that went away the week I expected a call, the interviews were excrutiating. Sure hope the extra prep for this one pays off.

Hm...maybe that one would work, then. Though...really, *I* was the one that benefited...the company almost didn't care! But it made ITs job easier, that's for sure.

Maybe if I just start brainstorming on paper, other ideas will come. AND I get an excuse to use pen and paper. Mmm...pens...paper...

But it'll be tomorrow. I'm too sleepy now. Goodnight, all!

If IT's job was made easier, then the company benefitted, whether they acknowledged that or not.

And, it's ok to fudge small details like that... in fact, use it to show how you took the initiative and did something for the betterment of the company without being asked.

Anyway, good night! ;)

What did you do for the most fun on a weekend?

Go driving to a new place; or, if it's not a good weekend to drive, settle down with a couple of good books.

What is the best fun trip you ever had?

The summer I was eight, my parents and I drove from San Antonio to California and back. We took our parakeets with us.

Hippies tried to hijack us, and my daddy almost had to pull his gun.

A torrential rainfall caught us in the desert, and we stopped at a motel court in Gila Bend, Arizona; the proprietress came out in curlers and robe to get us settled in for the night.

We stayed in a Holiday Inn in L.A., a round building twenty-some stories high; the bellboy hid the parakeets on the cart by surrounding them with our luggage. We got on the elevator, and the birds woke up and started making a great racket; the other people on the elevator were trying to find the source of the noise, while we had the most innocent looks on our faces.

I found signature jewelry in my name at Disney Land. We drove through a Sequoia, and bought petrified wood. I saw the Golden Gate, and the Grand Canyon.

Tell me about the first computer you ever used.

IBM System 360. A room full of equipment and three shifts of operators. A room down the hall full of cardpunch machines. Greenbar paper printouts, and I had to flirt with the operators to get them to mount the letter-sized paper and the upper-lowercase print train for me.

Did I mention that I'm old???

Tell me about your computer at home. Did you build it, or buy it? Why?

Built it, about 3 years ago. AMD Athlon 1700 processor, MSI KT3 Ultra m/b, 768meg DDR333 mem, two physical PATA HDDs totalling 200gB, CDRW, DVDRom, ATI Radeon 9000 AGP video card. I built it because I knew what I wanted it to do, and I could do it "on the cheap." It does what I need it to do, but the time is coming for me to build another.

Oooookay ... got this out of my email just now. It's from Cool Company.

Hi Candidate,

We would like to bring you in for a final interview at Cool Company!

Unfortunately, the only day available is Wednesday. Please let me know what time works best with your schedule.

Please email a time to me and I will confirm.

Thank you!

Question: Can I wear the same outfit as I did this week, or do I have to show up in something different?

Systems analyst guy may not notice, but the lady who called you might. Best of luck, needless to say, prayers will be on their way.

We're gonna be doing a LOT of praying this coming week!

It's a better solution than just letting it expire.

That was an excellent suggestion mrsnad. A very graceful solution.

Seems that power shoulda' come back by now.

You know, that's what we were sayin' just after Isabel...and we were still sayin' it 8 days later. It just depends on how much damage was done.

Over 1 million people are without power, and it's not inconceivable that they'd rush crews to the gulf coast to prepare for her second hit, which looks like it will be worse.

Looks like it's swinging towards New Orleans. That'll give Pensacola a break (and miss our field trial site....we need only 4 more weeks!)
