The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Actually, we are running with that idea! Just offered it to Hair's friend Tiffney, and she's thrilled.

Poor Danny. ;~D

It's a better solution than just letting it expire.

I hope it's ok, but we gave them to a friend that couldn't really afford to go but wanted to...and since it's not something that we are in to, I asked her if she'd like our tickets. She is so excited about it."

That's brilliant.

No word since this morning, so I'd guess they don't have power.

Wonder if her company still found a way to make 'em come in to werk...

My Miami office is still down. Power is still out. Sorta surprising. I figured they'd be back online this afternoon. They didn't flood this time.

This morning we gerry-rigged some mail forwarding to yahoo mail accounts for the Miami staff so that they could dial in from home or the office and keep up with e-mail.

Funny thing is, that office was *supposed* to already be on our new bulletproof mail system, but was delayed. Dammit. Another few days and they'd never even noticed that they were down. [grump].

Her boss prolly came by in a boat to pick all of them up. And requested that they be sure to dress properly while at it - no casual clothing just because of the wind and damp. And that the cost of the conveyance would be taken out of their pay.

Heh...I s'pose they aren't quite THAT bad, but yeesh...some of the hoops they make her jump through!

Roger that.

My company switched to ADP just last year for paychecks and such. I really don't think there would be mass hysteria breaking out if there were some kind of announcement that checks were delayed a day or two because of hurricanes at the processing center. Certainly, there would be people that had a specific hardship... but those could be handled.

First rule of management: Take. Care. of. Your. People.

I cannot imagine ordering my people to put their families or themselves at risk for something as trivial as a payroll run or a mail server.

Rosie, DaBear drilled me during the drive down there (it's about a 30-minute drive at that time of day).

They always ask you about your best/worst trait; about the biggest success/worst failure of your career; why you left your previous job; what you liked most/least about your previous job; where you plan to be in 1/2/5/10 year(s). Start thinking about the answers to that stuff, and write down your responses; that way, when they ask you those questions, you'll be relaxed when you answer 'em.

Eek...I don't think I *have* any "big successes". I've never headed up any big projects. I've always been just a team member...a bitty cog in the great workings of whatever-my-department-was-called. I'd like to think I'm a very good and dependable bitty cog, but I guess that's not likely what they're thinking about. And the few projects I have headed up haven't been anything important...something like just inventorying a companies computer assets for the first time isn't very impressive when the company is only 50 people or so.

I shall ponder, I guess. And writing stuff down is a good idea. It's the best way to sort out thoughts, IMO.

I'm kinda screwball in my interview questions. My favorite questions are:

-- What did you do for the most fun on a weekend?
-- What is the best fun trip you ever had?
-- Tell me about the first computer you ever used.
-- Tell me about your computer at home. Did you build it, or buy it? Why?

By the end of that discussion, I pretty much know what I need to know about that person.

IMHO.

They tell me what I need to know. :-)

I've always been sorta p'offed at those stupid sorta questions in interviews.

Reminds me of my interview for the place I am now when the lady that would be my boss asked me something about "stressfull situations" and how did I deal with high-stress environments.

I said, and it is pretty much close to quote: "I come from a place where stress means that somebody leaves the day's activities in a body bag. I don't think that here is anything that could possibly happen here that will give me that level of stress."

...or something like that... :-)
