The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Insides were missing as far as I can tell. And the head. Rest was all over the coop

Hmm!

The privacy fence would be a puzzler to them but don't put it past them to find a way in.

Well if it was a predator, it ~will~ be back.

Be sure to keep that coop door closed, sis.

That's exactly right.

I am actually thinking of putting the girls in a cage in the garage for a couple of nights and smoothing out the dirt in the coop to look for tracks.

I'm very proud. I've wanted to do this for years and just never could.>

Remember to keep your eye open for equipping these folks, and yourself, with Hobbit Hole products. We now have those orange-handled Rescue knives that might come in handy.

The more security you can muster the better...

I'd have thought as suburban as you are you'd only have to worry about neighborhood dogs getting in, but who knows.

I'm thinking of putting a cracked-open egg out there, just as a bit of bait. Then checking for footprints in the soil, which is very silty.

You know...CSI *is* my favorite TV show...

I'm actually a bit embarrassed that I went barging out there and dashed right in the coop, lifted up the coop and shuffled all around picking up the poor beast!

Blew all my forensic evidence! Disturbed a crime scene, so to speak!

But I was a bit shocked, you know...

You'd think as much as I watch it (I rarely miss even the re-runs) I'd know better than to mess up my crime scene! It'll be harder to get the evidence by setting up bait. And I can't be sure that's what it really was...

I coulda got footprints, I'm sure...this morning.

I'm sure there must be a print or two left out there, chica.

But the cracked egg idea is pretty good!

Only drawback is that you can't be sure it was the same predator.

Hey 2J. I think I know what killed your chicken.

Raccoon.

Yeah, a raccoon would have been my bet.

Good evening all...

you gotta coon gettin' in... only a coon eats the head and innards and leaves the meat...

he'll be back... count on it...

I'm thinking of putting out a live trap and seeing

your local conservation agent should have live traps you can check out...

a fox would've carried it off... could've been a skunk, but they'll usually eat the breasts... a coon eats head and innards...
