Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

"Shameless Precious Looting" might fit nicely in the keywords.
But I won't do it.

The phones are down all over the place. My brother wasn't able to call his son until late Tuesday night, 24 hrs. after the storm. SirKit's brother also couldn't get any word out until then. It could be that your friend just hasn't been able to get someone with a Sat phone yet. The regular phones are not working; land or cell. I guess some folks have the opportunity to get to someone with a satellite phone, and some don't.
The phones are still out in some parts of Hattiesburg, as well. I talked to my big brother this morning and he's trying to contact my older sister, Brenda, who is in H'burg, and he can't reach her. He found out from my younger sister that Brenda's house is gone, and he's trying to let her know. They actually had two homes and a cottage on their property, which is right on the water in Ocean Springs. Their concrete block cottage was 12' off the water and about 100' back from the edge of the yard where the steps went down to the beach. The storm surge came up far enough to wash that structure away. They had a smaller house about 300' off the beach, and it is still there, but that house had been rented. I don't know about the little cottage that was between the two.
It will be tough for her and for my brother, but they are alive, and grateful to be so. SirKit is going to call FedEx today to see about shipping a pallet down to the coast with some of his tools so that they can start rebuilding. He had recently bought a new table saw, and still has his old one that works, he just wanted to update because the other one is almost 35 years old. At least that would give them something to start with. SirKit also said it would be good to try to recycle the wood left over after the houses came apart. He's thinking that folks could remove the nails, let the wood dry for a bit, then it could be used to at least make some temporary shelters.

SirKit said he heard some preacher on the TV last night saying that every church in the Southeast should commit to taking in at least 10 people. Either house them at the church, or find a place for them live and work for them in the town.
Just think how many people that could help! In some instances, it could be a brand new start for people who had been trapped by circumstance in New Orleans, and didn't have any way to get out and make things better for themselves.

I slept in! I figured my hours this week and I can go to work an hour late today thanks to my slaving extra for DemonLady Wednesday. The psychological boost of an extra half-hour in bed is marvelous.

I think the reality is that, even if they rebuild New Orleans (and they will), some people will simply just never return.
But that's a great idea. We've done that with refuges from Bosnia. I hope we can do something similar now.
The church should be on the first line of response.
