Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

I'm sorry, but I disagree with you.
If for any reason Rose and I had to evacuate Austin right now, within the next 24 hours (the mandatory evacuation order was only given 24 hours before the hurricane's landfall) we would not be able to do so. Yes we're physically able, yes we even have a car, but right now, and until next week, we don't have enough money to put gas in the tank to drive several hundred miles.
Now, are we incapable of thinking for ourselves? Are we some kind of dependency cases? By your logic, I guess so. Guess we just deserve whatever we get when the Big One hits.

There's a difference between those that couldn't leave and those that wouldn't. The fact that there was physically no way for those without cars or funds to get out - that's just wrong. I'll bet most of those in the Superdome couldn't leave. The ones who wouldn't, stayed in their houses and are now taking pot-shots at rescuers.

I agree, there is a difference between those unable to leave and those who chose to stay. But I'm seeing too many FReepers refusing to acknowledge that there are perfectly legitimate and valid reasons why someone would have been unable to leave.
The level of callousness being shown in many places on FR in this regard has me seriously contemplating a vacation from FR.

I understand your frustration bear. I have it too.
Just get away tonight, no more browsing through their rants, no more news. Watch something light on TV and try to smile at your honey. And come back to the Hobbit Hole in the morning. :~D
Good night everyone!

I am sorry Bear, I am not trying to say that people who couldn't leave can't think for themselves. What I *am* saying is that those who could have left and didn't are not thinking for themselves when they should be.

My point is, blaming the victims, even when the victims deserve some of the blame, is not helpful. Instead, put the blame where it belongs: squarely on the local and state officials who had no plan, were incapable of formulating a plan, and were apparently unwilling or unable to call in people (i.e., federal officials) who were capable of coming up with a plan and executing it. From the time Saturday evening when the magnitude of the approaching storm became known it's been clear that the local and state officials (as represented by Mayor Nagin and Gov. Blanco) have been completely without a clue. Everything that has happened in N.O. since then has been a direct result of their incompetence.
Anyway, I'm tired and cranky, so I'd best get to bed. Good night.

This brings to about *eight* the number of posts that I made and yet decided to delete instead. [sigh] I'll go ahead and post this one, since I'm not saying anything important.

I completely agree, Mr. Bear... with one exception: You and Rose wouldn't likely be out in the street firing on helicopters that were trying to drop supplies.

g'mornin folks
Like everyone else, I'm weary and frustrated that I don't know how to respond. I do know I want to slap the "Louisiana officials" who say the feds aren't responding fast enough.
Sometimes, I just hate people.
But, we're in this for the long haul. None of us have really experienced anything like this in our lifetime. People are gonna be tired and cranky and miserable for a long time. We just have to remember that.

Morning everyone!
Sorry for my ranting last night, but I tend to go on and on when the subject is something I feel passionately about. It's obvious that there are no easy solutions no matter which way you slice it.
I think from here on out, I'll just pray for the folks in those areas and for the Lord to give wisdom to their leaders in order to restore the city.
That said, I'm sorry if I rubbed anyone the wrong way over the last couple of days. You all are the ~bestest~ friends I've ever had and I love you all to pieces. ;-D
