In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
smarmy \SMAR-mee\ adjective
1. revealing or marked by a smug, ingratiating, or false earnestness *
2. of low sleazy taste or quality
* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.
Example sentence:
"I was so disappointed to hear you didn't get that promotion," said Kit, using a smarmy tone of voice that made me fume.
Did you know?
Something "smarmy" will often ooze with self-satisfaction and insincerity. Much like its synonyms "unctuous" and "slick," "smarmy" has a history that starts with a meaning of literal slipperiness or oiliness. The verb "smarm" appeared in English in the mid-19th century. Etymologists don't know where it came from, but they do know that it meant "to smear," "to gush," or sometimes "to make smooth or oily." A few decades later, use of "smarm" was extended to sometimes mean "to use flattery." The adjective "smarmy" appeared in the early 20th century. At first meaning "insincerely flattering" or "smug," it later took on an additional meaning: "sleazy."

Unfortunately, my "TV" dinners are not economically feasable. The kids like them though. There is just something about eating haute cuisine while watching reruns of the "Simpsons."

It's kind of cool that we have used seven languages on this thread today. ;)
I have only used three. English, French, and HTML.

We had english, latin, german, japanese, korean, french, and html.
OUCH!!!!!!!!!!
When we were leaving the place we were at this evening, I just went ahead and sat down at the table closest to the gate to the parking lot as a group of 25 blind people with canes came in the access I needed to use to get out. The gentleman who was "in charge" asked all of them to move to the right because there was a woman on crutches in front of them. Sitting down was the smartest thing I could do, because as it was more than one cane tapped at my crutches and the table I was at. I've got enough trouble attempting to walk with those bloody things.
Lucky you...........TV dinners were preferable to mom's cooking when I was growing up.
My mom's cooking was so bad, I joined the army, and immediately fell in love with the mess hall.
THAT is a screaming RIOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ROFL!!!!!
My favorite line of the night: "Guys, I inflate the tires, but you get to ride the bicycle home..."
Slip, I keep forgetting that your speakers are disconnected. I know that women are aroused in different ways, but for me that's like female circumcision.
(Okay, maybe not that drastic, but I need all of my senses connected)...hearing the deep rumbly voice promising forever (and garbage duty), smelling that familiar guy smell, feeling the different textures of the male anatomy and tasting his chocolate while he is unconcious. Did I tell you that my husband's company "gifts" Godiva for quality awards? "For that quality experience"...
I OD'd on chocolate today - YUMMY!!!!!!!!
(chocolate????) (yuck)
I'd still rather have a bottle in front of me
Than a frontal lobotomy.
My dad taught me how to swim when I was six.
It wasn't so hard after I cut my way out of the burlap sack.
Jack.
GOOOOOOD Eeeeeeevennning, Lurkah!
My marina got title, and we scrapped it.
It was a rotting hulk, taking up a very valuable slip - and it had trees growing on it. We raised that thing from the bottom four or five times, waiting for him to come get it.
I think he is tied up.
BTW, never let your congressional aides work on your boat. They are bad at it.
T5, you have been powerful scarce lately, leaving for work at the crack of dawn, etc. why are you shunning us??? ; )
We heard about cursing in Chinese too.
You wonder how "voluntary" that congressional aid "help" on his boat was....
Slave intern labor?
No... A northeast liberal congressman would never do "that" to his interns, would he?
I do apologize for being scarce of late-the bunco group only plays one Monday evening a month, and it is not my turn to hostess again until November.
I'm not meaning to shun class, really-I'm doing a texture and paint job for a customer I've had since I last worked for a builder. She is not a favorite customer because she makes changes at the last minute, tries to get my helpers to do work that is not in the contract (once she even tried to get them to drop everything and rearrange a room of furniture for her) and she is a liberal, worse yet. She does pay promptly, though, so I'm leaving early and staying late to get done with her work so I won't have to see her for another 6 months or so when she decides to re-do another room in her house. If I really bust ass today, I should be done with her job tomorrow and be able to get paid.
