USA Mass Transit next
07-12-2005 | Me

As I have witnessed the last terror event, this overall picture came to my mind and I am sure a few others of us too.
1993 WTC bombed, damage and death but no collapse. Then the bombings in Africa..more damage, collapse and death, effective.
9-11 the colmination of the past 2 "practices".
2004 Madrid trains above ground bombing effective but could there be more?
London July 2005, bombing mostly below ground. Somewhat effective but still not "there". Were they trying for the collapse of downtown London?

Now think of our cities and rail system...

Are you trying to scare yourself unnecessarily?

Since 9/11, everyone in charge has been thinking our cities and rail system. Also, every attack since 9/11 has gotten smaller and smaller in terms of effectiveness.

Huh? This isn't breaking news.

Also, aircraft are mass transit. There is no "next" for USA mass transit, it's already happened here.

NYC subway has a vulnerability. Some of the tubes run close to the underground water tunnels that bring in fresh water from upstate NY. Worst scenario is a subway train exploding near this water line, crack it and cause flooding in the entire subway system. If the NY subway system is knocked out by three foot of water (which takes out the signal sensors on the tracks) for several months, the economic toll on NYC will be immense. Most of the workers in the financial center and other businesses rely on the subway to commute into the city. If the workers cannot get to their jobs, most financial activities come to a halt.

Not exactly an original thought, but you are right and your reasoning is thought provoking.

I wonder what the reaction would be to suicide bombers arriving in the US.  9-11 was one thing, we could distance ourselves somewhat from the event, but if they show up right in our own neighborhoods?  Well, that's a different story.

Based on this comment, my guess is that you are not very familiar with the subways in London.

It is something we do have to be vigilant about, but I am sure homeland security is well aware of it. I do not bury my head in the sand and think nothing will happen here again, but I do know it won't be quite as easy now.

I wouldn't count on bringing a city down that way. The Brits slept in the underground during the blitz. I believe the subways under New York are cut through granite. The subways under Moscow are the deepest in the world due to the protection the ground offers.

All bombing a subway does is kill people.

>>>Worst scenario is a subway train exploding near this water line, crack it and cause flooding in the entire subway system.

That almost happened when the WTC was hit. The water wall was and still is being monitored.

I don't think that line is open yet.

Collapse downtown London? With 10 lb. bombs? More likely our security services have been a lot more efective than we've heard if that attack is all they can muster. Suicide bombers are good at terrorizing the populace but they have never been strategically successful and are a sign of desperation. Eventually they run out of volunteers and have to resort to trickery and blackmail.

Any further attacks on American soil must result in internment camps. End of game.

Or with engineering.
