I don't know anyone in the band and I never met them and I never saw them in concert.
But the music means so much to me and was so true to me in the dark times that I feel like I know them and I was there backstage, watching them live, living it.
No one hears his lonely sigh
There are no blankets where he lies
In all his deepest dreams the gypsy flies
With sweet Melissa . . . Mmmm
Again the morning's come
Again he's on the run
Sunbeams shining through his hair
Appearing not to have a care
Well, pick up your gear and gypsy roll on, roll on
Crossroads, will you ever let him go? . . . .

and I never saw them in concert. In those days, there was nothing but the music. You'd be lucky if the band even faced the audience, much less have any "show patter" or anything but gritting teeth behind swirling guitars and Greg's Hammond B3 with Leslie speaker.
At a show where they opened for Santana, they introduced a new song written by the "other", at the time, nameless guitarist (Duane and Greg had done all the previous original tunes) called "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed".
Long...loooong jam that blew me away!
Found out that "other guitarist" was pretty good too.
While Dickie was good, I lost all interest after Duane died, and 'Eat A Peach' was my last album.

I really like their music as well... the first time I met them was back in 1989-90 right after the Tianoman Square situation in China, I was hanging out with Butch and Dickey Betts and was telling them how outraged I was about what the Chinese government had done, Butch said to me " you are one of those political guys"..and didn't really seem to care for my choice of discussion topic. They were cool, Dickey and I pounded a couple of beers and joked around. It was a lot of fun. I've met a lot of musicians thru my friend and for the most part they are pretty cool people...Steve Miller was fun talking to.
