The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Ok, here's the low-down in a nutshell...

My battery was completely run down. Could be I left a door open. According to the guys at Autozone, my alternator is just barely able to keep it going but can't contend with a door left open. I need a new alternator. The guys at Autozone said it could wait but we should get one as asap. Got a new battery.

When Steve was trying to jump my car, his truck overheated and the radiator spewed. It's been giving him grief...has holes in it, you know. Real clogged up.

Radiator...alternator...hmmmm...

Happy Father's Day, Steve...you get a new radiator! He just put it in.

Can't stay any longer...sneak freeping.

If you find that there's a drain on the new battery, let me know. There's a simple diagnostic for it.

Won't bother you with it now :)

my alternator is just barely able to keep it going but can't contend with a door left open.

That doesn't sound exactly right to me, but I'll concede to some of the guys if they buy it... IMHO, Your alternator is not stressed by leaving the dome light on (door open)... it's not running, so I'm not sure why they would say that.

The battery went dead potentially from something being on, and I believe it if they're telling you the battery would not hold a charge.

The alternator charges the battery when the engine is running. When alternators fail, they fail to recharge the battery going down the road. All your electricals would then be a drain on the battery that doesn't get recharged, and it ends up dead again. If this battery holds a charge, I wouldn't bury that alternator yet. The battery going dead from an overnight dome light isn't evidence of weak alternator, and a bad battery won't hold a charge even with a good alternator.

Whew! I've got my rice steaming, the curry cooking, the wine chilling; we're having trouble tracking down one guest but it looks like I might pull off a successful hostess event thing tonight!

I hope we're really loud and obnoxious and pay the neighbors back a little.

This is more people than I've ever had over before - a whole three! And as long as the DVD player doesn't stop working, we're set.

Just hope they don't freak Rosie out. They're pretty mild-mannered, though.

It'll be fine!

Even if the DVD player quits, there's a lot to be said for board games or a friendly game of cards.

There's always a backup plan, so long as the company is good. ;-D

Hehehe... yes, but the specific purpose of this evening is to watch anime, so it would be a bit of a bummer.

We had two batteries fail in our old car... just broken down by the heat of summer. Would seem to be working fine, then one day would be completely dead. Wouldn't take a charge, wouldn't take a jump, all we could do was replace the battery. Never had to do anything to the alternator, though.

By the way... Walmart has a three year warranty on their batteries. We know, because the second one that failed had been bought at Walmart to replace the first one that failed; Walmart gave us a rebate for the remaining warranty on that battery, came to about $20.

I had something like that happen to me this spring. My Solara died in the church/school parking lot one day. I tried to jump it, and all it would do was click... wouldn't even try to turn over. PE left work early and rescued me.

Turns out the battery was completely dead. The terminals were corroded and wouldn't let the batttery charge. He disconnected my battery and jumped the car using his battery. I was under STRICT orders to drive straight home.

It was probably the result of not completely closing the door. What gets me is that I was able to start the car that morning and drive to the church (a 20 minute drive), no problem.
