*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Heh. Gotta love the Appy'tude. We have three of them at my barn. One of the horses that I ride is an Appy, and while she's a great horse, she always has her ears pinned regarless of how she feels about things. :-)

Well the horses probably like the break too. :-) My trainer called me on Friday and didn't leave a message, (I haven't been around since Friday morning) I don't know why she called, hmm...

Well, we worked them a ~little~ today, on the lunge.... set a couple trotting poles out to work them over. We took pictures of course, but I haven't looked at them yet.

Yeah. I'm excited. We bought mats today. We couldn't figure if the smooth or rough side went up so we put the rough side up so they would have more traction. Is that right? I also bought feed buckets. We are going to get a water tub when we get there so we don't have to haul it. I'm buying some feed here and once I get a vet there I'll see if the protein needs to be as high or they need as much. Boots coming. So much still to do. I have to get tags tomorrow and.....:')

I'm trying to get a post formatted showing how she did.... I had a bunch done and lost it. I hate it when that happens :~\

We set up some scrap lumber as trotting poles today.... we didn't make it into town to buy ourselves some nice example poles ;~D This was sortof a spur of the moment experiment.

I think this was probably Cyn's first exposure to trotting poles. She acted like it anyhow. Here she has proposed the idea of simply saying 'no' to it. ;~D

The first several times she did jump it, or go around... Some goofs we got on film, some we didn't, and I hope to show examples of both good efforts and goofs. This was a nice early effort with one pole.

Here, we've added a couple more, and she's getting through them.

Here she relapsed and jumped the first pole.

Here's a nice effort... We're playing around with the spacing, here they are a little closer together. I'm probably not scientific enough about the spacing of the poles, I tend towards trial and error.

We've added one more, and she's gotten herself a little behind here. She's gonna have to stretch to make the last pole.

Here they are much closer together. Too short, probably, but as you can see, once they 'get' what they're supposed to do, they'll try to compensate their stride to match the poles.

Just a couple more pics to show that we worked her in both directions... and that the first time around from the opposite side, she relapsed and made a mess of them.

But that's OK - she figured it out and we ended after she was working nicely again.

We worked Bay on them too, not as long and we didn't take as many pics, but I'll post them also in a bit.

OK here's a few of Bay.... First of him skirting them on the inside.... he knows he's being bad and he's in a hurry to get past me ;~D

Here he's being a better citizen.

Just one more, a picture of Bay doing a pretty effort on three.

That's it for now.... I hope I haven't already overloaded the dial up folks with too many pics!

Comments? discuss!

Cyn is a good sport about things, isn't she. She seemed to do well. Have you done pony over poles?

Pony's done a lot of poles and even jumps on the lunge... I've worked her a lot more on the lunge than any of the others.

I didn't want to show her today though, I thought it would be more helpful to Becky to see them spaced roughly for a horse's stride so that she can get hers started... And I wanted her see a beginner like Cyn so she could see the goofs and she knows that these kinds of things happen, sometimes they make a big wreck of them, but that they figure it out. ;~D

Cyn's a very good egg, and she does try hard. She's actually sortof a clutz, and this kind of thing is good for her. You can see how it works their muscles differently by making them elevate and change the length of their stride. Good gymnastic exercise for any horse. :~D

The distance between the poles in that last pic of Cyn seem to be just right for her. The pic where they are a lot closer together would be a good distance for Pony to work over. Bay looks nice in his last picture. When I've done poles, it's been to get them to be more aware of where they have to put their feet, rather than striving for stretching or distance. I think that I did five heel to toe steps of my feet between each pole for distance. Something that might be nice to work up to is fanning the poles out in a half circle and going over them that way. My horse could never figure out what to do with them in that case. He would always jump them, and then get really confused and upset because he swore to me that it's what he was SUPPOSED to do darnit!

We got better with her spacing toward the end. We started out too far, then too close, then just right. ;~D

Very interesting pictures:). Laughing at the one where you changed directions:), It looks like she is stepping squarly on one with her front foot?

I guess I should try lunging them. It just seems like so much more work for the person, then just riding...it's so hot and humid here now, and the arena is so dusty.

I took a few pictures a few minutes ago, 8:00 and Harley still has sweat running down his front legs...and that is without being rode.

Becky
