'Cheers' star Kirstie Alley has been attacked by members of the world's leading eating disorders group for joking about 'life threatening diseases' like bulimia on her new comedy show 'Fat Actress.'
Officials at the National Eating Disorder Center are furious with the actress for trivializing eating disorders during the debut of her new program.
In one scene, co-star Kelly Preston tells Alley's character that making herself sick after every meal is one way of losing weight- a practice commonly used by bulimics.
NEDA CEO Lyn Grefe says, 'My guess is that Kirstie Alley's concept for the show was born from her frustrations with the unreasonable standards found in the entertainment industry, frustrations that the NEDA understands.'
'However, there is nothing funny about eating disorders, and to make comic references to bulimia is dangerous.'
Nearly 10 million women and one million men suffer from this problem and it is estimated that another 25 million suffer from binge eating disorders.

I saw it too and actually enjoyed watching it. I plan to watch it again next week. I give her Kudos for coming out with this show. She's been slammed for years in the tabloids for her weight!
"it was pretty broad comedy"
Ohhhh. . . nice pun
Dear God! I'm glad it was a free Showtime weekend. I bailed after the John Travolta scene, having never even cracked a smile.
I was imbarrassed for her, it was soo bad.
What? No barf alert?
Couldn't they just make their production of "Raging Bulimic"?
The pilot is available for free on Yahoo. http://tv.yahoo.com/feature/fatactress.html
Oh great; another offended group. Oh the humanity!
You'd think people with bulimia would have more important things to worry about.
The show was way out there, I turned it off when Kirstie re-did the food scene from the film '9 and 1/2 Weeks' about 25 minutes in..
No, I'm sorry, she's within the rules: fat people are allowed to make fat jokes. You're allowed free reign to mock your own kind.
Like keeping their fingers out of their throat.
Can someone please tell the bulemics to hold it down!
The puns are coming up fast!
That was disgusting!
I 'm glad I didn't watch..
Kelly Preston, John Travolta, and Kirstie Alley! Sounds like a Scientology meet n' greet.

She'll go on a diet, and then have to be replaced.
How about Hildabeast?
