The Hobbit Hole XX - And take the hidden paths that run...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 03/05/2005 11:51:13 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And take the hidden paths that run...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

We are all well today, for the first time in a couple of months! It was so beautiful yesterday that we took a stroll to the park. The only downside was when elfboy jammed his finger on a basketball. Ouch! It is purple and swollen today, but he can bend it and says it doesn't hurt anymore. Whew!

I ~love~ my new car.. er.. van.. er.. vehicle. According to the sticker it is a light duty truck, but it drives like a car, seats like a van, and looks like an SUV. elfboy especially likes it because it came standard with a DVD player.

The rain stopped about a half hour ago, and I *think* I see sunshine! Today is the first day of spring, isn't it?

oh yes, and as for Capt Aubrey... I am finally making some headway on the second book. He has taken command of the Polychrest and is taking her on her first tour.

Neither have I.
Been trying to keep an eye on some of the stuff, but haven't gotten back to it.

Good to hear y'all are in good health! We have been havign recurring ear-aches...even the dog had one!!!! Other than that, life is good. I need to lose weight. blah.

Yay! I am jealous...I am driving a handmedown pickup truck with a huge dent in the side (long story). But I like pickemup trucks...can carry dirt! especially since I have spring fever now. Have taken a 'before' picture of my side-garden. am hoping to have an 'after' picture soon.

Congrats on getting through the first book! LOL I understand completely how you must feel about being unsure of whether to go on. Trust me, Post Captain and HMS Surprise get MUCH better. Have you met Flora the Dancing Bear yet?

Mmm... sometimes I like my cooking. I madea big pot of taco meat yesterday. I mean to freeze a lot of it but it'll be lunch for a week. Wrapped in romaine lettuce. Yum.

And my current book mentions the tragic fate of Tycho Brahe which adds to its coolness level immeasurably.

Should I know who/what Tycho Brahe is?

Astronomer a few centuries back during the Renaissance. Died because he was at a feast and needed to use the bathroom, but couldn't leave the table until the Duke left. And the Duke wouldn't leave. So his bladder burst and after ten agonizing days he died.

My sibs and I refer to the giant drinks at movie theaters as "Tycho Brahe size".

I knew I'd related that cheerful tale before! You'll remember it next time you're in a meeting... and it'll probably add two or three stops to your trip

Maybe Brahe's problem was mental conditioning against that sort of thing, perhaps? Like how it's pretty much impossible for me to use foul language?

Shhhhh!!!! No yelling whilst I was in a meeting!

You know, we don't really collect porcelin, so we weren't that familiar with Lladro. Until we went to the missions auction at church and there were two pieces that were valued at around $350.

We recognized the work tho as the same as a piece given to us when Luke was born. We knew the piece was "worth something" but didn't know much more.

It's not worth $350, but we have "Boy with Cymbals" which has been retired. I've seen it around the web for about $75.00.

Heh..I know I should go...but see, it's not doing it now! Same thing happened with the irregular heartbeat. It wouldn't do it for the doctor! (Did it for the nurse, though.) And my upset stomach...they checked me out completely and couldn't find any reason why my stomach was always tore up! (That didn't go away till I went on the Atkins Diet.)

This doc probably already thinks I'm a nut...if I go in there saying "I've got a vague headache, a distended vein on my forehead and a bit of pressure...but not right now.", he's going to think I'm really out of my mind!

I'm gonna clean up my house.

OK, where's your cholesterol medicine! Or at least get some Tension Tamer Tea or something to have about this time every day in lieu of your afternoon coffee. Or why not just drink some decaf coffee?

Put a camera in the bathroom. If you get the throbbing vein again, take a picture of yourself in the mirror. Then you have proof that you're not nuts.

Still that's quite a find...I bet it goes up...you would be AMAZED at how this stuff acquires 'valuable' status.

When I was a senior in high school, a great aunt who lived in California was visiting and gave me a figurine for graduation, having heard I have a penchant for these things. I am quite sure she thought it wasnt worth much, and while I thanked her profusely, and kept it on a high shelf and protected as I moved from place to place, I secretly harbored an intention of one day putting it in a garage sale. I mean, there were no discernable creator's mark/manufacture print on the bottom, and while it was pretty, it was not made of very high quality porcelain, and could even be called a bit cheap looking. But I held onto it because I liked such things and the opportunity to give away never came up.

Well YEARS later, after this great aunt had passed on, I was with a friend at a glass show. I was with her out of curiosity more than interest in the various types of glass, so while she hovered over what she was looking for, I wandered about the booths. To my surprise, I came across one booth that had the exact same figure I did! I made a beeline for it because I wanted to at least know who made these figures and thougth maybe the owner could tell me.

Well, I picked up the figure, which was a lady in bell-shaped skirts in grey and burgundy colors who held a crinkled hand-muffler painted in gold, and wore a bonnet that had the same crinkled/poufy decor with gold on it.

You want to know how much I was expecting this little replica to cost? About $15 - $20.

You want to know how much the price tag actually was?

$250.00

I was floored. The owner of the booth wanders over and says "Oh yeah! That's the most expensive piece of the lot that company made because it has gold on it."

Turns out it was a company in California that indeed, sold them in fairly cheap stores as cheap figurines, but since it went out of business, the pieces had become highly collectible.

Wish I could remember the name of that company...
