The Hobbit Hole XIX - Tomorrow we may come this way...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 01/27/2005 9:59:05 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Tomorrow we may come this way...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Gonna try to make mostly stuff that doesn't require heating. I just made up a big batch of hummus and I'm going to make something like tortillas to go with it. Yeah, I know...should be pita, but I couldn't bring myself to spend what they cost at the grocery and I don't think they're easy to make.

Vegetables aren't really much harder than doing in the nuker...but I do end up with more dishes that way. I can always eat salad stuff a bit more than usual. That won't kill me. ;-)

SSQ and I were chatting this week, and he said that my being a part of the Hobbit Hole has given him a whole new understanding of the Internet. He sees how folks from every area of the country can become good friends by having shared interests, even having never met! Of course in our case we have met, but we were friends even before we did.

Did I ever tell you what my sisters said when I was telling them about Entmoot last year? They both said they had been worried to death for me; that I might be getting myself into some dangerous situation going to stay a week with people I'd only ever talked to on the net. I assured them that having met ecurbh, and his having met others, and those others having met others, that we all had a good idea of what folks were like, and no one was trying to snow anybody else. It really is quite extraordinary.

Now, since you're gonna be going about mid-April, I think it's time you and some of your sibs planned a trip down to visit us and have a mini Anime-moot! We are in the process of de-cluttering, and there's more room in the basement for sleeping bags, etc, so bring Stephen and Mug and Bilbo, if they'd like to come. SSQ would LOVE for you to bring your instruments as well. Y'all could drive down on a Sat. afternoon, and get back before dark on Sunday. The only weekend that might be a problem for me would be Mar.19th. We're gonna be in Providence during the day for a Journal of Light Construction trade show, then I'm singing in a Tenebrae Service that evening. Y'all could come down if you wanted to, and attend the service with us, then we could come home and just have fun that evening and Sunday, but we wouldn't be home until after 5 on that Saturday, so that cuts the visiting time short somewhat. Let me know when might be a good time for you!

If I remember correctly, pitas are much different than tortillas in the cooking part. They are thicker, but I don't think they're any more difficult. You could find a recipe online to check it out.

I should have said that I think that pitas are NOT much harder than tortillas to make.

Heh...

Well, the big difference is that they're a yeast bread...unlike tortillas. But I found a recipe that looks pretty easy...I think I may try it anyway! Even if they don't puff, they'll still be just fine for eating.

RE: an animoot...I'll have to check with the siblings! The 19th wouldn't work for me anyway, as Stephen and I are likely going up to St. Joseph's Oratory in Montreal that day. Possibly the weekend before or after? Eek! Really not much time left.

Oh, St. Joseph's is beautiful!! SSQ and I visited it when we were in Canada for a week in 1985.

I've been there quite a number of times...but it's been awhile. Since right after I got laid off last time.

It won't exactly be an easy drive after April...

OK, dough rising. Now...what to tackle next? I WAS going to pack dishes today, but the grocery store didn't have nice boxes today. They were still stocking, though. I'll have to check again this evening.

For dishes, check a liquor store. Their boxes are smaller and more manageable for heavier loads. Ask them to save them for you, and not to cut the tops completely off, so that they're more 'hinged' and easier to tape shut. They may be willing to do that for you, then call you when they have several ready for you.

No ShootEx for me today. My cousin/roommate remembered that one of his brothers' kids had a HS wrestling match today. Just got back from that. He did OK.

Meanwhile i left my digicam pointed out the window taking one frame per second. It's going to be a pretty cool time-lapse movie when I'm done with it.

I just got off the phone with our credit card companies. Wanted them to know I made the payments. Apparently, I did so just in time...they were just fixin' to apply the monthly finance charges!

Because of paying them yesterday, I saved something like $75-$100.

One of the customer assistance people was obviously from India. But she was very helpful and I was very courteous in return. I always hope it makes someone's day a little brighter when they don't have to deal with a grumpy person, you know? She asked me "How are you?" when she took my call and I replied "I'm very well, thank you! How are you?" She was so stunned she stuttered a bit in reply! She said she was doing well and thanked me for asking! LOL

Then, after we completed our business, she asked if I wouldn't mind taking a little survey. It was automated and wanted to know how she did. I gave her all high marks.

:-)

It's been a great couple of days.

Got some good boxes from the grocery, I think. They had some from some froofroo brands of cereal that were sturdy and not too big.

The liquor store is kinda out of my usual way - not in town. But that's an idea...I'm guessing they have good sturdy boxes.

I'm almost done packing, though! Mostly just have food and pots and pans still out. And clothing, of course.

One of these days I need to get Stephen to help me load the rocking chair into the van to see how much room it takes up and if it's really feasible to bring it. I sure hope so. I think it's doable, especially if I get a roof pouch for the bulkier things.

Thanks...it's not the same person.

Trouble is...I really, really don't want to put them into a shelter, even a no-kill shelter. And with Cleo as old as she is, I've had several places tell me she's not adoptable by most people's standards. *sigh*

I guess I'll just have to keep trying. But I feel like I don't have much time. And really, I don't. I need to move out to Dad's in about a week and a half, and he's *barely* willing for me to have any cat with me. I could probably talk him into letting me bring Halvah in additon to Tam, but any more would be pretty much impossible. So I'm trying not to panic.
