The Hobbit Hole XIX - Tomorrow we may come this way...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Tomorrow we may come this way...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

RANT:

I absolutely HATE when the news [Fox just did this] interviews a deployed soldier and then puts his family on the air to 'say hello'. I get so embarrassed by it I turn the channel. It is always so awkward for the family, the children, and the soldier combined to have to 'act out' this moment on live national television. They should open up the camera link to talk to each other alone... and leave us out of it. The awareness that the live audience is there changes it from intimate and special to awkward and artificial.

UGH!! I feel so bad for the families 'forced' into these moments, that I just can't stand to watch them. Is Fox doing it so they can make themselves feel better about 'supporting the troops'? The voyeuristic element makes it feel so cold and sterile. I know the families don't talk like that in 'real' conversations. Why not just let them have a 'real' convesation off the air?

I have to agree...it makes me feel awkward, like I shouldn't be watching

A short waving moment would be cute... but not the "Would you like to say anything to your husband/wife/children? - While we all listen?" Yeah - I am sure there is a lot they'd like to say, if the live TV didn't make it impossible.

I'm tempted to write a letter to them. Just need to flesh out the right way to put it.

ACK! I almost forgot to add the raisins at the 2nd kneading! And they were in the fridge, ice cold, hard as a rock. I had five minutes from the time it started the 2nd kneading to the beep when I'm supposed to add the raisins...I got them out and got them warmed up in the microwave and dumped in just in time!

I need an editor, it's too wordy.

Dear FoxNews (and MSNBC)

I wish to express how uncomfortable I am when I see segments where you interview a soldier and their family and then let them 'talk' to each other for a moment while we all watch. Thank you for the noble intent to show a heartwarming story involving our war effort and our troops, all of whom have a family at home and a country that supports them. But those segments always fall on their face. I have asked around, and I've never talked to anyone who didn't feel icky watching it.

When you put them on public display for what should be a private moment between them, I turn the channel I am so embarrassed. It is always so awkward for the family, the children, and the soldier combined to have to 'act out' this moment on live national television. You should interview them, let them wave at the camera if you wish, and then let them talk to each other alone... leave us out of it. That would be a terrific service for the troops, families and the viewing public.

Having a family member in a war zone is not a cute game for them, it's deadly serious. What would they really like to say? That they spend every waking moment praying they get home safe, sound and whole.

If you would say "We're going to let you talk to each other ~alone~ now while we cut away to commercial", it would show so much more class than putting them on public display to say something shallow and cheerful and supportive. The awareness that the live audience is there changes the whole moment for them, from intimate and special to awkward and artificial. I shouldn't be there, and I refuse to watch.

Actually, I don't think it's too wordy. I'd send it just like that.

I think it's a very positive and frank letter. You don't trash them...you voice understanding, but state your position well.

BTW, wife was watching a segment of the Today Show talking about the dog show (I don't really follow it).

But they were trying to cross breed a poodle with a labrador in the hopes of getting the personality of the labrador and the stability and non-shed coat of the poodle.

All I wanted to know is how are they gonna guarantee they don't get it the other way around?

Heh, reminds of the time on The Simpsons where Homer gets the bright idea to breed the cat to the dog. "We'll end up with an animal with the loyalty of a cat and the cleanliness of a dog."

Heh...our cat's not too loyal this week. Yesterday was "Frontline Day."

She's still mad. Dog is saying "that was fun, let's do it again."

I shudder to think what a labrador-poodle mix would look like. Are we talking big poodle or mini poodle? And do you call the result a "labradoodle" or a "poodor"?

I've heard 'em called "labradoodle".

There was someone out Saturday when we were hiking with two little schnauzer / poodle mixes. Called 'em "schnoodles". I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry... They were awful cute, though.

It'd be interesting to cross a standard poodle with a giant schnauzer...GIANT MOP DOG!! Kewl.
