The Hobbit Hole XIX - Tomorrow we may come this way...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 01/27/2005 9:59:05 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Tomorrow we may come this way...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Ramius's dishes are that way... It was my grandpa on my dad's side. place settings for 20 or so... never been fully unpacked. And it's formal dishware so there are lots of pieces per setting, like the dinner and salad and dessert plate, three different sizes of bowls, and all the coffee cups people never use.

Eep... Rosie, I consider anything more than two plate sizes and standard bowls to be overkill. If you have wacky dishes, leave them out... extra cups would be good, by the way.

Oh, you want it up on top of the car before you start loading it! You don't want to try to haul that sucker up there fully loaded! ;o)

Do you have a roof rack; I don't remember? If not, you might better check about getting one put on before you buy a hard sided carrier. Or check with a store that sells them to see if there's a way to put it on without a roof rack.

His column is on the back page of January/February The American Spectator. Unfortunately, their regular "departments" in the magazine aren't online. But his articles are. Here's one he wrote recently about a "Wall Street Marine".

I have larger bowls and also saucers...but I think I probably won't bring those. Also have lots and lots of mugs - or tea cups, I guess.

Yep, I have a roof rack.

There aren't many places around here that sell carriers! So if it doesn't fit...I dunno where I'll go next.

I didn't really track gas mileage on my trips, so I'm not sure. I did notice that it affected the handling a bit in windy conditions, though. My car is very low-profile, so it added nearly 50% more surface area to catch the wind, but I think it should not have as great an affect on your vehicle. But it is something to watch out for.

You ~definitely~ want to attach it to the roof before filling though - it will get unmanagably heavy much quicker than you think. And I would recommend only using it for lighter, bulky items - bedding, clothing, shoes, etc. It was easy to fill on my car because it is so low-profile, but you may want to borrow a stepladder to get up there.

ecurbh's clamps to the door frame... he doesn't have a roof rack on his little car.

Making sure it's secure is important, as much wind as it'll get at highway speed :~D

I'm figuring on using it for shoes, clothes, bedding...maybe some pots and pans. I think that'll work! Thanks for the tips!

The cinnamon raisin bread turned out quite excellent! It reminded me of my old harvest blend bagels that I can't get any more! Except they had sunflower seeds in them.

So, I'm making another loaf, with roasted unsalted sunflower seeds added right to the flour.

:-)

Let us know how it goes! ;-)

Ya know...once the dough is made, making bagels isn't all that hard...

Yep, very quickly (couple of minutes or so) in water with salt or a little baking soda in it, depending on who you ask. Dad always just used salt.

And then you bake 'em! But it's the boiling part that gives them that nice chewy texture.
