The Hobbit Hole XIX - Tomorrow we may come this way...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 01/27/2005 9:59:05 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Tomorrow we may come this way...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Microwave? Toaster of Doom? I have those...

And I'll bring a coffee pot. I'm guessin' you don't have one of those. ;-)

Mmmm...artichokes! I like those...usually with butter and garlic.

Yeah...he's got a really cool voice, IMO. I like his style.

Microwave, certainly. No toaster. And no, no coffee machines at all.

It was a good artichoke...

Corin, don't you keep saying you're doing to quit the pool board?

They've been given notice this year that I'm done on Labor Day.

We've been through this before. Since we just got rid of the problem board members last year, and since we've just pulled out of debt, I agreed to give them one more year.

While it still takes far too much of my time, it's a much better situation than it was even a year ago.

Mstar : its a special oil lamp that has a diffuser wick...it diffuses fragrance into the air like a potpourri burner. It's a really neat thing.

ExGeeEye - I LOVED the Egyptian references...there were some pre-Judaic ones there too if I'm not mistaken. Anyway, I was impressed with the research he obviously did...and if I may say so myself, appreciate that alone because of my intense interest in ancient Egypt and the tribal cultures of Africa. I laughed my head off over the snake remark. Its not often that an popcultural reference is snuck in so well.

another one of my flybys....

I have no idea, but I hope that it is. Houston is notoriously the 'last chicken in the shop' city for any and all interesting things going on. I remember way back in the 70s when the Tutankhamum exhibit went through the US, I was SO ANGRY that it would only stop in Dallas. I had wanted to go see that exhibit so badly it hurt. As it was, I had to rely on the experience of a family friend, who loaned me the exhibit book that she got for a class report.

Like GW, Houston is constantly underestimated.

I see that there is now a new "ultimate edition" of "Princess Bride" out. I don't consider it a chick-flick because it has some pretty famous cameos in it, and some absolutely great lines.

AGREED! Inigo Montoya has always been my favorite. Mandy Patinkin is great. I will have to see if I can get that.

Does anyone find themselves looking at their stacks of Video tapes wondering what the heck to do with them?

hi alkhin,
I am finally on the mend, but PE has been in bed sick all day. Actually, he has been in bed since about 6:30 last night.

He came down with it so suddenly that I tend to think his is food related, but I can't be sure. Ya know, it was just about a week ago that bittygirl got her tummy illness. He appears to be having her symptoms, except he lacks the fever... (and she did puke all over him).

bittygirl wanted her own valentine, so elf-boy made one out just for her. She loved it so much, she thought she might eat it. LOL! Give a baby paper...

Think I am going to crash in elf-boy's room tonight so's I don't have to "fight" to get my side of the bed back.

BTW bittygirl is somewhat of a nightowl. right now, she is peering up at me with her smiling eyes and an ear to ear grin. She is pleased about standing up by herself (she always is). I tell ya, she is going to be my adventurous one. She is nine months old as of Friday, and is this >< close to walking already.

The Hobbit hole just sent out another Ka-Bar/Cuda set. The recipient is a 32-year-old Marine Lance Corporal, shipping out this weekend. I learned about him by way of a column his brother wrote in a leading magazine of conservative commentary. It's an inspiring story of someone discovering his real purpose in life, even while surrounded by the artsy-fartsy set in Manhattan, where 9-11 has faded into myth, and America is the monster. If you're interested in Paul's inspiring article, freepmail me, and I'll point you to the online edition.

I sent a note to the magazine's general email address, asking to have it passed on to the writer. Luck held, as with my initial email to Camillus. After a couple of email exchanges, I sent the knives to his New York City address (where they are as illegal as hell), for him to mail to his brother. This is the email I received from him Friday:

----------------------------

I received the package. The knives are stunning and beautiful, thank you. Not to mention your care and craftsmanship in preparing and packing them. I'm really blown away by what you're doing, and by the multiplicity of such efforts in our great country. Your note was fantastic, and I've saved everything in its package for when I hear from my brother and have an idea where I might be able to send this.

Thanks again, and godspeed to you and all at the Hobbit Hole. Semper Fi!

Good morning!

Quite a lovely day at the moment, but it's supposed to switch to sleet and then freezing rain later. Wonderful...

Hopefully it holds off until after I go to see that cartop carrier thingie. I'm still making up my mind whether I'm going to just jump on that. There was only one in the classifieds. It's slightly older and square - wonder what that'd do to my gas milage? But it'd hold a LOT.

Dad things I should go ahead and tell people at work that I'm leaving. I dunno. I think it's still a bit early. Granted, it being a gubmit job, it's all but impossible to fire me, and there's no reason they should want to...but still.

It might be a good idea to go ahead and do it. You don't want to wait too long - that would be unprofessional and could impact negatively when your future employer calls this one for a recommendation. Giving your boss time to find a replacement is always a good thing. Give him enough time and you may even get to train the newbie - win/win for everyone and gets ya a stellar recommendation.

Yeah, that's about what he said - that if I wanted to use them for references, it would likely leave 'em happier if I didn't wait tooooo long.

If the right moment comes along, I guess I'll take advantage of it.

Your dad may be right. I hadn't thought about the gubmint aspect. If you give them your final date in writing it would be vey difficult, if not impossible for them to force you out earlier.

You've got about 6 weeks until you move, right? I'd say wait no later than a month. I don't know what the pool of available folks is, but the sooner you give notice, the more time the boss will have to advertise for the position, and still plenty of time to train someone before you go. I agree with your Dad, your boss will be much more likely to give you a good recommendation if you give him plenty of time to find your replacement.
