Before I retired I lived in America and pretended to be a native.

If I eat a late supper at 10pm., it is now almost 2pm and I won´t be going to bed until about 2:30, so from 10pm to 2:30am is four and half hours. That is just as though I had eaten at seven and gone to bed at eleven thirty.

Arkansans survive tidal wave

LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Making their way to an elevated resort about 15 minutes from the Thailand coast, six Arkansans were able to escape and survive the tidal waves that hit the country and killed more than 1,000. Overall, the disaster killed tens of thousands.

The Arkansans were on a trip as part of a cultural exchange program. Five are in their 20s and one is a toddler. They were staying at a resort area where at least 100 people died.

"It was an incredible miracle," said Dave Riner, president of International Cultural Exchange program the group was with. Riner confirmed that the Arkansans were safe along with six Oklahomans who were also part of the program.

The Arkansans included Kevin and Stephanie Themann and their 18-month-old son, Soren, all of Conway, John Patton and Tisha Patton of Conway, and Matt Pace of Texarkana. The program was based out of Conway.

The Themann couple had opted to go on an early-morning snorkeling trip and were on a boat filled with tourists when the waves began to hit. The boat was able to quickly drive into an inlet and evacuate the group, which sought shelter in the island's jungle where they waited for the seas to calm.

Others in the exchange group worried the couple hadn't survived, but they eventually returned, said Sue Patton, who is John Patton's mother. She said she spoke with her son on Monday.

"My son and his wife were watching their boy," Sue Patton Conway said. "They were trying to call the hospitals. They didn't know what to do."

The group is no longer in Thailand. They planned to take a flight Monday to India, where they will live until July as part of the exchange program, Sue Patton said.

"They seem to think everything is going to be OK," she said. "There were so many people dead and so much tragedy. It's just a miracle that the whole group survived."

Cold condition's death toll at least 11 in Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK (AP) — The death toll in Arkansas from sub-freezing temperatures or traffic accidents related to icy road conditions stemming from last week's winter storm is at least 11.

Temperatures were balmy in many parts of the state Tuesday, and most remaining patches of ice melted away from major roadways, but the after-effects of last Wednesday's snowfall lingered as late as Monday.

Police reports from the days before Christmas show that at least 10 people died on Arkansas highways after vehicles went out of control on the ice. And at least one more, a Jefferson County woman whose car slid off an ice-slick road, died Monday.

State police accident reports show that that two people died in one accident from the ice and slush of the snowfall on Dec. 22.

William E. Ryburn, 71, of Rison lost control of his vehicle, crossed the center line and hit an oncoming van on U.S. 63 in Cleveland County, north of Woodlawn, during the initial sleet of the storm.

An hour later, Kenneth G. Ferris, 44, of East Greenwood, Ind., and Victor M. Pinto, 42, of Indianapolis, died on Interstate 30 in Caddo Valley when their vehicle crossed the median and was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

Another death happened the next day on I-30 just 4 miles away. Lesly Y. Caballero, 25, of Plainfield, N.J., was ejected from the passenger side of a vehicle that skidded of an icy bridge and landed on top of her.

On the evening of Dec. 22, Barbara Ann Mauldin, 40, of Dierks died when her vehicle went out of control on the ice-covered Little River Bridge of U.S. 71 and collided with a Mack truck.

Four more traffic deaths occurred in three separate incidents on Christmas Eve. Ignacio and Cecilia Gavia of Grand Prairie, Texas, lost control on icy Interstate 30 in Benton, got out of the car and were struck by another vehicle.

Phillip Cameron, 19, of Indianapolis was stopped on the side of Interstate 55 in Crittenden County and outside his vehicle when he was struck and killed by a vehicle that spun off an icy patch.

Richard Laboy, 31, of Jonesboro also died Friday on Arkansas 214 west of Waldenburg when he lost control on the ice and slid into the path of a pickup.

Oh my gosh! As many people as I saw talking on their cell phones and recklessly driving during that big storm in Flagstaff, I would have thought lots died. I never heard any numbers though. Is this one of the storms in which you were stuck?

Now I'm really angry! In Arkansas, we have at least had the good sense to keep queers from being foster parents. It appears that a d**n activist judge, under the tutelege of the ACLU, has ruled it unconstitutional! Meanwhile, it continues to be perfectly fine to discriminate against heterosexual adoptive parents for the crime of being over 55.
