The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Just got the word that all evening activities at the church are cancelled.

Seems what we got was all the rain freezing, then snow on top of that.

Can't wait to drive home in the truck. Wish I was haulin' a load of gravel...

I wonder what got me started on Beetles? Seems like one day I hardly even thought about them, then the next it's all I thought about! I know that's not unusual for me, I'm admittedly a tad obsessive when it comes to things I'm interested in...but usually there is a trigger and I can't think what the trigger was for this particular obsession.

They actually sell sandbags here for just that purpose...weighting down the back of trucks.

I know. I just got caught offguard. We weren't ~supposed~ to get any real weather until the weekend.

I never saw anything like that before in my life...certainly never when I was growing up in the Houston area!

I probably wouldn't have thought of it, even!

Mmm, but that's how it is with obsessions! They just hit out of the blue...

Eventually my obsessions mellow into hobbies or fond memories but they never go away entirely. And I love the first wave of the obsession when you know why you love a thing and want other people to know, too.

Cute pic of Cyn we took today:

Well, we're off... gonna go look at the falls and see if there is noteworthy flooding.

Well, I kinda have always wanted chickens...my sister in law told me she remembered when she first met me 14 years ago or so that I told her I wanted some chickens...

I guess it just came to my mind when the jedis started wanting a pet and we really couldn't afford the vet bills for other animals. The "no vet care" requirement of chickens is appealing on a tight income. We were on a tight income when my greyhound got hit by a car and that cost nearly did us in...nearly had to sell our car! So I kinda had it in my mind that I wouldn't get an animal I couldn't afford to maintain properly.

Chickens seemed to fit the bill.

Well put! It's kinda like being in love too...giddy-like at first then hopefully developing into a kind of personal commitment. Like my chickens...how often do you hear of flakey people getting chickens and they just dump them or they die or they end up giving them to a farm if the beast is lucky? I was very enthusiastic about my chickens, but the true test came when it was 7 degrees outside and I still felt that delight going out to feed them and talk to them.

I got "The Natural History of the Chicken"...it's great! Think I oughta bring it to shootmoot?

Makes me think of the time Joshua blurted out "NAW-STRIL", answering one of Matthew's science questions.

Now that is a NAW-STRIL!

Yep that's the one. I'm not like her, but I can really relate to the woman that gave CPR to her frozen chicken...

I admit I don't get the chicken thing, but then I'm not a bird kinda person (I take that back. I love to look at hawks and falcons. But no others)

To each, her own! That's what makes the world great... we can all have different obsessions.

Knife shipping report:

Due to weather and general business, I still haven't shipped out any knives. I'm about to send out a "combo" (Cuda and CRKT) to "our" Sgt Scott, and another equally-deserving NCO from an off-FR email list. Here's what I plan on using for a cover letter. If you can come up with improvements, please let me know. I have to hustle to find boxes (the new knife shape is a challenge), and get them packed and to the PO before 5 today. Otherwise, shipping slips another day.

---------------

My name is Rick, and I represent an online troop-support group, The Hobbit Hole. We received your name from xxxxxx. Based on his description, you more than qualify for our Hobbit Hole sheath knife.

This knife is not something we give out lightly. It only goes to troops in the line of fire. From what Tom says, you more than qualify for that, too. Despite the best in weaponry and armor, a good blade adds that extra bit of comfort to a dangerous job. I wouldn’t set foot outside the wire without one.

For that “special knife”, we’ve chosen the Camillus Cuda “Black Ops”. Camillus is America’s oldest knife maker, having been in business since 1876. The knife has a blade of 0170-6C high carbon tool steel, with an epoxy coating to help protect it. We have our internet address (freeper.the-hobbit-hole.org) laser-engraved into the blade, in case you ever want to visit our site.

I’ve worked to make the knife extra-special by filing grooves into the handles to match those on the blade tang. The extra grip assurance makes a great knife even better, in my opinon. Along with the edge honing I did, I consider the two hours of labor I put into your knife well spent. It’s as perfect as I can make it. I won’t send out a blade to a member of the American military without that effort.

In the accessory pouch is our Hobbit Hole folding knife. We have given away hundreds of these handy knives to any GI who asks, or whose name we can get. Again, it’s a great knife, a licensed copy of a $250 custom knife, and I spend the extra time to make it as sharp and perfect as I can make it.

Please accept these knives as a token of our esteem and gratitude. You have earned far more than this. You’ve earned our thanks for your great service to America. The Hobbit Hole supports our troops, and honors those who have distinguished themselves above even the honorable service of all American troops.

We're one degree warmer than you. Just beginning to snow here, and it's supposed to snow all night. Don't think it's gonna be much, though, maybe 3 inches.
