Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Though we pass them by today...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Safe travels. I'm sure the kids are going to enjoy their visit to the State House. Lots of history in those places.
When I drove Joseph to school this morning it was 3 degrees! ARGH! Sposed to get down to about -5 tonight. Don't know how Rosie can stand it cause she's usually colder than WE are!

Really warm here... and soggy.

We've gotten 4 inches of rain in the last 24 hours.

Thanks guys. I should be fine once we get started. Am trying to cheer myself up with the "you'll see your friends" trick...

Good morning Pippin, Rosie! Everyone!!
Say, can any of you guys help me? I am trying to put together information to write a post on my blog about Western civilization. (HERE is where I started talked about what I wanted to do)
I am hoping stuff on Free Republic can help. I guess I am wanting to prove that Western civ IS superior, but thats going to take some doing or at least looking at information to see if I can back that statement up.

Weeell. Not sure I can be much help but I will jabber a bit and if anything usable show up... so be it.
For one thing Western civ is much more individualistic. Civil&community mindedness seems great but it tends to produce less innovation and dehumanizes people.
Even eastern cultures that have individual freedom don't prize it in the way we do.
Then there is the whole respect for women thing. Western civ was the first to really go all the way with letting women be full members of society. You could say that western civilization was the birthplace of global imperialism or you could have a little perspective and you could saw western civilization was the birth place of global trade and diplomacy and community and we exported civilization and technology to improve life to the whole world.

Shakespeare. Newton. Pascal. Bill Gates. The printing press (yes, the Chinese had a press. We knew what to do with it). Sterile surgery. Tolkien. "Canterbury Tales", Jane Austen, Sherlock Holmes, television, Apollo program...

She was not around yesterday either was she? I don't think I got the usual morning hobbit hole ping from her.
To: TalonDJ
Yesterday was expected - she was off and she disconnected her computer last week in the great office de-clutter. But she should be working today...
