The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

It's a plastic spoon with the bowl coated in chocolate.

Didn't we get an e-mail from a soldier who had used his to 'encourage' a bad guy to cooperate, when the guy wasn't intimidated by the other soldiers' guns?

We have an anecdote about that, from Wneighbor's son-in-law, I believe. I think it was the solid "click" of the CRKT knife that did it.

I think the twisted thinking of the enemy goes something like: "These are Americans. They're not allowed to shoot me. But nobody told me anything about knives. I don't want to risk a couple pieces of my anatomy to find out what they might do with even a small knife".

I do own an old Ithaca SKB, model 600, over and under, that I got used a couple years ago...I really love that shotgun, it fits my face, when I shoulder it, I am looking right down the barrel.

I'm not much of a knife person, although an AG Russell (which I think is not a great knife) with a 3" blade lives in my pocket. I like it because, even folded, it is so slim that I hardly know it's there.

Favorite knife is my Forschner Victorinox filet knife with 8" curved blade, it can really cut up some fish, easy to sharpen, holds its edge, great piece of equipment, IMO.

Morning, everyone.

Good Morning All - Deconstruction of the Christmas Decorations has commenced and taking a break. Listening to the commentaries. Amazing how much good stuff is on there.

OT-hmmm coffee, I think I'll have another cup.

Nice looking filet knife, I got a wood handled rapala. Found it on the shore of the Lake of the Ozarks when working on a road and bridge study. That was a heck of a souvenir of the trip. Cleaned up slick and very handy on the rare occasion when a fish decides to bit my lure out of sheer frustration.

Now, where the heck did we put the rest of those boxes. sigh.

Forschner/Victorinox makes some great kitchen knives, or a filet knife, which is like a kitchen knife used out in the field. I'm not an expert in kitchen knives, but after watching the Food Network, there are obviously a lot of chefs that are knife-happy, and will pay more for a kitchen knife than any GI would for a combat knife.

AG Russell has some nice knives made under his name. I've never had a bad deal with him, although sometimes his sale prices can be beaten elsewhere. His company also has enough sales clout to get some very desireable exclusive variations made for him.

I tend to be very conservative in what I carry, in that I don't change pocket knives unless something far better comes along. That's why I have that little, cheap, innovative Kershaw knife/scissors on my keychain. If I have to produce a inoffensive knife in public, that's what I use.

My other pocket knife does not come out of my pocket except in the most dire circumstances. It's a Spyderco folding karambit, and its tiny 1-7/8 inch blade is intended soley for deep slashing and quick removal of internal organs.

Good morning all.

Steve took the jedis to church. I had the WORST night. I was up at 2am and couldn't get back to sleep till around 5am. I had a splitting headache that I thought the cholesterol medicine would help but it only made it worse. A couple of aspirins finally did the trick, but took forever.

I hope everyone has had a merry Christmas and a happy New Year? We've done a lot of just stuff together. It's been so mild and nice that yesterday we even went for a long bike ride in the park. Wonderful.

Matthew got a Pave Hawk model for Christmas and he's been working on it with Steve. They got a Cranium "Cadoo" game also and have been playing it (not me...I'm not big into board games. I just keep the popcorn coming.)

We FINALLY got ROTK all watched. I'm glad they put more of Eowyn into the story, but of course it wasn't enough for me. I read the whole story of her and Faramir to Steve last night, just so he could know what was REALLY going on behind the scenes!

School starts tomorrow.

You learned a valuable lesson. Cholesterol medicine makes headaches WORSE!! I usually get a headache AFTER drinking red wine, that's why I'm still searching for one that doesn't do that to me.

This has also been the first semester that we've actually seen a "problem" with Steve going to school all the time. It's a good thing he's almost done.

It's not noticable with Joshua, but it is with Matthew. Matthew doesn't do what Steve says right away. It's not anything awful, like direct disobedience...hard to explain, but it's more like anxiety! Steve will tell him to do something and Matthew will get anxious and then say "I better ask Mom." Steve has to stop him, reassure him and then make him follow through!

I see it as highly "fixable" as Steve spends more time with him. Trust is re-established and all. Steve has patiently worked on it all this week that he's been off. It's gotten better just in this short time.

Still, it's a good thing he's almost done. I imagine soldiers who come home after long deployments must have something like this to contend with?

I got the headache while we were out riding out bikes...I think it must be allergy related. I still have it but it's not too bad right now. I think I'll skip the cholesterol med if it's still nagging me this evening!

Was it you, long ago, that I told about how Steve likes to pick up tools along the side of the road? He does it constantly, finding them with some sort of eagle eye he has? LOL Many many times, he's suddenly turned around because he had to go back and get a tool.

Well, last Sunday after church, as we were coming out of a parking lot, I looked down and saw a tool! A wrench...one of those kinds that is open on one end and round on the other? I screeched "A TOOL!" and jumped out of the van in my dress and went and got it!

My first tool! A 10mm wrench about 4" long.

Then, yesterday, coming home from getting some "zoo doo" for the garden, I spotted a 5/16ths socket!

I'm hooked on finding these tools in the road now!

Heh...

Every time I get someone over to work on the house, I find tools left behind.

So far I've found a tape measure and a circuit tester thingy.

Good for you! I find mostly money. Came out of the post office once after spending $15 to mail some knives to the troops, and there was a $10 bill on the ground. I took that as a sign of God's blessing on our project.

I once almost found a whole box full of tools in the middle of the road. I zipped into a parking lot, and was running back to the toolbox when a semi screeched to a halt, and almost jackknifed. The driver jumped out and grabbed the box. I figure he wanted it more badly than I did, if he was risking everyone's lives that way.

I've found screwdrivers and torx-drivers in new cars. Gifts from the UAW, I think.
