The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

I've got lots of healthy collard greens and field peas along with the Texas version of lembas.

Totally off base: The Twilight zone episode where the bookworm (Burgess Merideth) hides in the bank vault to read at lunch and comes out to find a post nuclear world is on the sci-fi channel right now!

Yes, I've never had a scope get out of alignment, 'course I'm reasonably careful with my guns, which I consider generally to be precision instruments, with the possible exception of my Mossberg 500 with 18" barrel, no choke.

Rifles are my surgical instruments. A handgun or shotgun is a blunt instrument to be used only when a rifle is not available. A knife is needed when everything else went to hell.

During the Monk Marathon, I skipped a couple of eps I had already seen, and went back to work on those Camillus knives. I noticed the thong hole in the handle. The inside was "fuzzy" from drilling the micarta. I ran a reamer through the hole of each knife, and breathed a sigh of relief that I spotted something less-than-perfect that was corrected.

This should not be considered as an endorsement for putting a knife on a wrist thong or lanyard. The last thing I want is a blade I sharpened bouncing back at me if I dropped it. Baaaad tactical practice to have a blade tied to you.

While puttering around on the knives, I realized these were the first Hobbit Hole weapons going out to the troops. Although they will be listed as "utility knifes" on the customs form, they're not really practical for slitting open an MRE package, and there are very few tent pegs that need whittlin'.

I don't care if I have my trusty rifle and handgun with me. If I have to go out into badguy land, I'd feel positively naked without a good blade, even though the circumstances when I needed it were exactly zero.

As someone who has sneaked in a few guilty hours of surreptitious reading myself...that one just about brings me to tears. Seriously! Poor little guy...

Isn't that the one that has the real ironic (for him) twist at the end?

Mulled wine is red wine warmed with spices like cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg, and some orange and lemon flavoring. We didn't make it yet, but maybe we'll have some tomorrow, or later in the week when it's supposed to snow! That would be nice to have in front of a fire!

Glad your trip was uneventful. Glad to hear your step-dad is doing ok. It is tough to watch them get old.

Hope your family has a VERY Happy New Year!

Didn't we get an e-mail from a soldier who had used his to 'encourage' a bad guy to cooperate, when the guy wasn't intimidated by the other soldiers' guns?

"Isn't that the one that has the real ironic (for him) twist at the end?" Yep. He's happy as a clam to have the entire library to himself, years and years worth of reading with no one to bother him and "all the time in the world"...until he breaks his glasses and and goes back to being blind as a bat!

It was a Twilight Zone marathon.

Also got to see the William Shatner one where he see's the gremlin on the wing of the airplane but nobody believes him until the plane lands and the wing is all magled.

And My favorite, totally dumb ending is the one whith the Martian in the diner...got to see that one too.

I bet it was! Just never had a chance to see any.

Good morning. I'm tired. We'll be going off to church soon.
