The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Because Mom didn't have an oven over the Thanksgiving holiday in which to bake one! LOL

I've been seriesly craving the stuff and couldn't make it till my oven was fixed. I finally did yesterday and just polished the whole thing off in one sitting. Nobody else likes it.

We also had the backstrap of a deer that Andrew (Celeste's husband) gave us. Steve cut it up and wrapped it in bacon like filet mignon and cooked it till was really tender. Mmmmm!!

Gotta go! Expect me when you see me!

Someone owes me half a day...

Got home from church, which was lovely, to find my grandmother had managed to get my mom angry beyond all reason and Mom was taking a nap with a headache. Had to get grandmother out of the house. So I had to spend my entire afternoon at the bookstore, which ordinarily I would love but she spent the whole time whining at me or fussing. Argh.

This is the first time today I've been online. I've driven about six trillion miles and I've got a headache.

Afternoon all!

A lovely Christmas here at the Stormhands' household. Had 19 here for dinner yesterday. I started the day with mimosas...

Boys, course course, were happy with all the stuff.

Right now, however, I am LMAO that wife's sister and husband are in the other room with Luke assembling this erector set type ferris wheel they bought him. I am certain that I said "no" when they first brought it up. After all, the box says "ages 8 and up." They've been at this for three hours or more. Serves 'em right.

OT - didn't get coconut cake or pie, but wife found a pumpkin cream cheese pie recipe that's just right tasty.

In other news, fitness dwarf is going back to the gym in the morning. South Beach, however, starts again next week.

Family did purty good with presents fer me this year. Still, I'm just gonna have to buy muh own drill bits...

Jr. got me a new boxed set of The Hobbit and LOTR. It's paperback, but they had the sense not to buy the movie versions (which I would have read, but not preferred to own).

I'll upload some pictures later. But I gotta go install my copy of "Roller Coaster Tycoon 3."

I'm a happy dwarf.

Ain't family just grand? Some relative always buys that thing you don't want them to give your kid.

Glad to hear you got The Books! I've got some B&N cards so I'm going to make a list...

Here's the cover letter to Andy. It was far more difficult to write than the others. No way would I want Rummie's job, machine signature or not.

My name is Rick. I am a member of The Hobbit Hole, a group that supports our troops. We have been made aware of your service through correspondence between your mother, Celeste, and our Hobbit-friend Kim.

We send out the little Hobbit Hole knife to troops as a token of our gratitude. Yours is just like the hundreds of others we have sent out, with the exception of engraving your name on it, too.

The other, somewhat bigger, knife is our “Hobbit Hole Special”. It is given in expression of our deep gratitude for those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Other recipients include a chaplain in the Army’s 82nd Airborne, and the Commanding General, First Marine Expeditionary Force. We are honored to add you to that list.

We are also humbled by your courage and sacrifice. While this small token is as grand as we can make it, it is still only an imperfect approximation of our pride and gratitude for your honorable service to our country.

Please remember us kindly in the better days ahead. We won’t be forgetting you, or your comrades.

For the Hobbit Hole:

Excellent letter.

I found the picture in TIME. Since it's in a publication like that, it wouldn't be wrong to scan and post it...would it?

I scanned it and it looks fine, but when I put it into Photoshop to save for the web, it gets all grainy. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

This is vey bizarre. About an hour east of me (towards the coast), they got 12 inches of snow. Snow apparently crossed in a little band from the Carolinas up across Tidewater and across to Virginia's Eastern Shore...
