FREEPER FAMILY TABLE--Thanksgiving recap
me | The Day After...oy vey! | grellis

Posted on 11/26/2004 6:47:07 AM PST by grellis

I am going to keep it really simple today--I don't know about you folks but I am still digesting and I have relatives returning any moment. Here are a few queries...

How was your Thanksgiving?

Are all of your relatives liberal democrats?

What is your all time favorite Thanksgiving dish?

What is the worst Thanksgiving dish you have ever eaten?

Did anyone else get snow this week? 8^)

Why are you answering these silly questions when you should be out shopping?

What is the airspeed velocity of an African Swallow? European?

Can anyone lend me some Tums?

Gabz, the mole trap works the same way as the pitch fork, and the pesky varmint doesn't have to be disposed of, it'll become mulch.

You just set the traps in the path of their tunnels (soft spots) and when the mole passes, whamo! Once you see it has been set off, you can pretty much be sure you've killed it. The traps can be used over and over.

However, I was at my parents' house one morning and saw a mole trap go off. About 30 seconds later I saw that nasty rodent dig itself above ground an run down the hill! I have never in my lifetime seen a mole run above ground. He was pitchforked that afternoon.

I live close to a large field, so for me, there is little hope of ever catching them all. I've lost several bushes in my front entryway from those moles this year, so I will
be a little more vigilant when spring rolls around.

I've been real sporadic today, so I'm sorry for being so late in responding..........

I'm not sure if my hubby is going to be real thrilled hearing what your hubby has to say about the moles.

Our dogs were digging for the moles this year, too. The cat caught two or three of them and then "returned" them to us on the rug or the porch!

You can put out diazanon (sp?) for the grubs, but you better buy it before the end of December when they quit selling it for good. Unfortunately, it will kill everything, including your earthworms.

Waah! Nobody brought green bean casserole to our family Thanksgiving get-together!

Hey onyx!!!!!!

I love sweet potatos.............I learned that what I don't like is all that candied stuff. The potatoes are sweet enough! I bake them, fry them, mash them. I'll take them any day over just a standard potato any day.

I always like to have potato chips around, and usually have a bag or 2 in the house. Salt & Vinegar, sour cream & onion or some other "flavored" kind. But absolutely NOTHING beats sweet potato chips. I've tried making them a couple of times, and I just about have it right.

Nobody brought cranberry sauce to our family Thanksgiving dinner, which was strange, because you expect to see it on the table. But otherwise we had so much food that we didn't eat dessert for another two hours. Then we divvied up four kinds of pie.

Hope everybody got a start on their holiday shopping today.

You would not believe how fat our squirrels are. They waddle.

Don't have a bunch of squirrels around here, but there sure are a lot of fat deer....no pumpkins, no cantelope, but the worst insult.....they ate all my corn....and I don't have a hunting license.

I've got hubby rolling laughing, as I've just finished reading this to him. But the traps do sound far better than the "do not have children after using this product" stuff sounds.

I've got 2 acres and am surrounded by woods and farmfields, so, like you, I'll never be rid of them....I would just like to keep them out of the immediate perimeter of the house.

OTOH - I've got a couple of bushes that I want to be rid of................nah, I'll just cut them down and dig'em up.

(note to stalker: moles are rodents, like mice, those who live inthe country contend with them)

Hubby didn't have the reaction I thought he would - he asked when are we getting the cat?

diazanon is not something I really want to put out.

Cats are good, although I don't care for our cat since she was Hubs' and he never had indoor/outdoor cats and she isn't trained to suit me. She thinks all surfaces are belong to her. I have clapped my hands and raised my voice to get her off the tablecloth at least four times in the last two weeks. But she is a good mouser.

If you have a farmer neighbor with barn cats that s/he is willing to give up and they stick around (the cats not the farmers) then you are over like a fat rat.

Sorry for all the puns. I am feeling stupid after all the turkey and playing time-share with hubs over our screwed up ISP that decided to eat our wireless connection for Thanksgiving. We are taking turns on dial-up until Monday!

Diazanon is nasty stuff. Our new neighbor put out about 10 bags of it last year then cached all the plastic bags in his barn for about four months. Sheesh! There is not a bird to be sen on his place.

I have been fighting a flu type cold for almost 3 weeks now.... what a delightful holiday. This cold did not keep me from being at Walmart and then Goodys and sitting eating breakfast at the Cracker Barrel by 7:30 am.... that is my idea of shopping. Thats my Thanksgiving tradition, sick I know, but I love it.

(you know I am sick, I am smoking menthols.... yuch)

Thanksgiving was nice, quiet, because I feel so bad. My daughters helped out, and we had no relatives, so it was easy on me.

My favorite thing about Thanksgiving is a chocolate pie that I make only once a year, for fear of eating the whole pie with a big ole glass of milk in one sitting. I will share with anyone who would like a chocolate pie upside down (do we ever do a recipie thread?)

The worst was at my mother in laws the year I was married... we never went back.
(the words "stove top stuffing" should say enough)

cough, cough, achooo... I am going back to bed

Well, I read my earlier posts and I guess it did sound kind of hillbilly, watching the yard all day for movement. But, I like to think of it more in the terms of "Caddy Shack". My Dad's yard is immaculate and he is asinine about it. As a matter of fact, I won't even park in his driveway, because he will "guide me" as I back out, fearing I will bend his precious blades grass!

It has been hilarious over the past years to watch him deal with rodents and animals of every variety. The raccoon episodes are usually the funniest simply because they are so much more crafty than other critters.

Now if I ever see my Dad dressed in camouflage, with black paint under his eyes, and holding a detonator while hiding along the side of the house, I'll know it has gone too far. As for me, I'm noticing this genetic trait coming on much more strongly as the years go by. I will have to learn to control the urge to help people back out of my driveway!

Oh, D! I feel for you! I was sicker than a dog earlier this week coughing up stuff, not smoking until about 4 in the afternoon, barfed up my morning coffee, chills and fever and recovered enough to cook yesterday.

TG, no one else has gotten it. I took the kids to Walmart today to replenish all the stuff we used up for yesterday and get new winter jammies.

I thawed out the rest of the cheesecake I had made for hubby's birthday and baked pumpkin pie. I never want to eat again even though everything was delicious. I feel so fat.

Get well soon!

A barn cat(i.e. outside) is the only thing we will have....no inside cat and no inside/outside cat.

And that is my decision not hubby's----and I love cats.

I remember telling my mother when I was a kid that I couldn't wait to have my own place because I was going to have cats and she could not come over with her dogs. She remembered that as well, because when I told her about the first dog I got after moving to Delaware her reaction was that she was going to get a cat and bring it to me.

One of the brothers that bought the place across from us works for the Veteranarian that their mom uses for the stray cat rescue she runs. He has promised me he will see to it that I get at least one as a barn cat.

(NOTE TO STALKER: living in the country, mice are common, outside cats do wonders to control the problems inside)

Mmmm. (not!) Green jello, no less. Sounds like someone's idea of a joke that became tradition and everybody thought they had to like or tolerate it because they thought everyone else did, or it's late and I'm rambling.... ;-)

How was your Thanksgiving? Mine was fine, rather quiet. I've been doing most of the cleaning and cooking for the past 5 or so yrs. Thanks to careful prepping (sous chef-fing) and meticulous clean-as-I-go, the process allows me to relax and enjoy with family. I don't mind the cooking, just not real comfortable with the bird. Small group again this year.

And I forgot to add, the sink drain pipe failed. It had been replaced last summer and the seal failed. It could have been worse, but it was quite a job to get all the water cleaned up, the pipe repaired, and the dishes finished.

OH NO....you didn't sound hillbilly at all......and I hadn't even thought of "Caddy Shack."

I'm sorry to say, but your Dad sounds like my ex-husband about the yard. I cut the grass only once in 5 years, because I used the mower in the wrong direction. Don't go that way....PLEASE!!!!!!

I cut grass for my spending money in the summer all through the 70's and did it in Florida in yards with citrus trees - I know how to cut grass. I think that's why my husband rarely asks me to cut grass around here.........There are a few shrubs and bushes that wouldn't exist if I had my way!!!!!
