FREEPER FAMILY TABLE--Thanksgiving recap
me | The Day After...oy vey! | grellis

Posted on 11/26/2004 6:47:07 AM PST by grellis

I am going to keep it really simple today--I don't know about you folks but I am still digesting and I have relatives returning any moment. Here are a few queries...

How was your Thanksgiving?

Are all of your relatives liberal democrats?

What is your all time favorite Thanksgiving dish?

What is the worst Thanksgiving dish you have ever eaten?

Did anyone else get snow this week? 8^)

Why are you answering these silly questions when you should be out shopping?

What is the airspeed velocity of an African Swallow? European?

Can anyone lend me some Tums?

"I've got a question for everyone - but probably mostly the menfolk around here.........
How does one get rid of moles?"

There are mole "traps" you can purchase at Home Depot or Lowe's. You can place them in the soft spots of your yard and when the mole crawls below the trap it sets it off.

If you have the time, you can also use a pitchfork, which is my Dad's favorite method. When you see the ground move, a simple poke with pitchfork can stop them dead in their tracks.

Here at my house, I have a "Grand Canyon" of sorts. My female Beagle is obsessed with following every mole trail. She has caught 3 so far this year, but the yard really suffers. I may soon be able to start charging admission to see the "Grand Canyon of Kentucky".

So sorry to hear about your dog. What a terrible way to start the holiday.

We had only my Mom here yesterday. We sorta agree on politics. Her only big issue is abortion and I'm very glad she feels so strongly about it because her marriage was failing when I was born but she had me anyway.

As for food, I didn't do anything homemade, I've been in charge of Thanksgiving dinner since I was 21 and I'm done.

Only exception to that was pumpkin pie. Thats my fave and it has to be homemade. Is pumpkin pie just a New England thing? Do others make it too? Sorry if thats a stupid question.

Thanksgiving was good. Thanks for asking. wonderful time with my kids and family.

Dad's a Republican, other than that...well, they're kin so let's just leave it there. It was, however, suggested that I run for congress after I met all their criticism of Bush foreign policy with "And we want to be friends with nations that have been seeking to bring us down for the last 15 or 20 years why?" Running for congress is not something I am going to spend much thought on in this district....Nader would be more likely to win here. I do think I convinced the sister-in-law that maybe it wasn't all Bush's fault. At the very least she's willing to rethink just who our friends are in the world and what it actually means for a nation to be a friend to another nation.

Celery filled with a mix of cream cheese, diced olives and chopped walnuts. very tasty. Squash on the other hand....

Much to the chagrin of my boy, there was no snow to be had. It did rain, however, and the puddles in our neck of the woods froze over. Much fun was had this afternoon, on the way to the park to feed to birds the toast my little girl makes in abundance, in stomping every piece of thin ice that could be found. Nice crackling sound followed by angelic laughter. Fully warmed my heart on this cold day.

day shopping or day filled with kids...now, I might be a little presumptuous here but somehow I think the kids preferred me spending time with them as opposed to being dragged around shopping malls while being told they can't have every bauble that catches their eye. Hmmm, maybe I was shopping for laughter at the park playground after feeding the birds copious ammounts of toast. The little ones were indeed shopping - shopping for a few more pushes on the swings before going home.

Dunno, don't rightly care. If you really need to know the specs of a swallow in flight might I suggest google?

Sorry, no tums. Big believer in letting the body do its thing. And why would you want to treat the symptom and not the cause anyway?

Knowing that my Cheyenne's time will come sooner than later, I have been doing heavy research into what our next dog(s) will be. Boxer is at the top of the list. Part of the AKC breed standard for Boxers is that they must be affectionate with children--the only AKC-recognized breed that is singled out in such a way. It sure sounds like she was completely maternal with your toddler.

Just remember--she wasn't just a loving dog, she was a loved dog.

Thanksgiving was wonderful - relaxing and pleasant.

First year that my parents needed help preparing the meal, so I was over at their house early to do the heavy lifting and other hard stuff. I was little sad about the need for it, but I was glad that I was able to help.

I brought some movies with me and kept them playing the whole day so we could drift in and out of them. Meanwhile, my family is all conservative, so when politics did come up, we could have a constructive discussion, and where we differed, we could learn from each other. I like that about my family.

I'm so sorry for your loss. We have a beloved kitty who is slowly dying of kidney failure and she will probably have to be put down in the next week or so. I feel for you. It's sad loving a pet and having them die so soon. Even an older pet (Ms. Kitty is 17) isn't easy to lose. I wish our little girl could just go quietly in her sleep but I don't think that's in the cards.

Our thoughts are with you.

Mrs. NHD

Happy Thanksgiving! Thanks for asking.

How was your Thanksgiving? Mine was fine, rather quiet. I've been doing most of the cleaning and cooking for the past 5 or so yrs. Thanks to careful prepping (sous chef-fing) and meticulous clean-as-I-go, the process allows me to relax and enjoy with family. I don't mind the cooking, just not real comfortable with the bird. Small group again this year.

Are all of your relatives liberal democrats? No, not all. My sister doesn't discuss politics, but I have a suspicion that she and BIL are dems.

What is your all time favorite Thanksgiving dish? Loooove pumpkin pie. And, if I may say so myself, I make a darn good one. Guests are fond of my cornbread stuffing.

What is the worst Thanksgiving dish you have ever eaten? Liver dumplings. (not my idea...)

Did anyone else get snow this week? 8^)I wish! My sister did, 3 hours south, but we got just a glazing later in the day, mostly slippery roads.

Why are you answering these silly questions when you should be out shopping? We decided to avoid the madness this year. Will probably go Saturday.

What is the airspeed velocity of an African Swallow? European? Is that a trick question? ;-)

Sorry, all out, didn't need them this year.

Hubby says you have grubs and the moles are doing you a favor----oh! and to get a cat! Our kitty will sit for hours by a molehole. She generally gets her prey. ; )

I am sorry about your doggy. Boxers are wonderful dogs. Our eldest dog, a blue tick, has been showing signs that he is getting ready to go to the happy hunting grounds.

He lies on the floor to eat. He sleeps most of the time in front of the fireplace when we have a fire, in fact he sleeps most of the time. He has cataracts and will bark at my husband or me or the kids when he spies us in the yard. The postman no longer ticks him off, etc.

I'm sorry for the loss of your beloved pet.

Oh Grace - you've made me all teary eyed all over again.

My daughter was 4 when we lost our lab/chow mix, she wasn't so much a playmate, but like your boxer, was a protector to the point that if Jax so much as wimpered, that dog was barking at me or hubby to fix whatever the problem was.

Jax was in a home-school preschool at the time and about 2 months before my girl left us, one of the dogs of the woman who ran the school had a very large litter. The runt of the litter only lasted 3 days which had to be explained to the kids. I dreaded telling Jax about Sam's death because I was uncertain of her reaction. So I just told her, while in the car on the way home. Her reaction lifted me up so much. She told me she was sad and would miss Sam, but smiled and brightened up when she told me, "but it will be OK because now Sam is taking care of Lucky's puppy up in doggy heaven."

Hang in there Grace, your son will get past this and probably quicker than you.

Mole traps????? I've got enough trouble dealing with the mouse traps I have to set IN the house!!!!

I like your Dad's method.......but I've never seen the ground move!

We couldn't figure out why our 18 month old lab/chow and the 11 year old lab/chessie all of a sudden started digging holes in the yard again.........I think I've figured out why they were digging holes at this time last year. I had blamed it all on the puppy digging holes. We now know differently!!!!!

(note to stalker - I live in the country, insects and rodents are part of life)

There is no such thing as a stupid question, unless it remains unasked!

I doubt pumpkin pie is just a New England thing.......it seems to be a universally American thing.....for everyone but me. I do not like it and so I do not make it. I let others make it or else I buy it. My husband (born in Mass) and my daughter (born in Delaware) love it.

Hey Gabz!

You might try "french (sorry) fried" sweet potatoes someday.
They're delicious.

I was born in Texas and am now living in Oklahoma. Even though I don't really care for pumpkin pie, I make it every year just as my parents did when I was growing up.

I love cornbread stuffing so that's my favorite. I made enough to feed an army so have plenty of leftovers. I'm reheating the ham now and will throw in the stuffing shortly. I don't want the bird to dry out so I'm not going to re-heat it.

We love pumpkin pie here in North GA. Make one every year with whip cream on top.

Pumpkin pie is hugely popular throughout the Great Lakes region as well. Pumpkin anything, in fact. Pumpkins grow much better in the north than down south, so we Yankees have the advantage of fresh, cheap pumpkins.

This year, after cutting out all of the cooking flesh from the pumpkins, we left the husks outside (meant to take them to the composter, forgot). The squirrels ate the husks. Devoured them. You would not believe how fat our squirrels are. They waddle.

The cabbage (apparently) can't be used in just any jello--it must be green. As I said, even when prepared correctly, it is an awful combination. Truly! I think the aim was a sort of sweet-n-sour dessert. What you actually get is cabbage...in jello.

My parents had a Clumber Spaniel with epilepsy (from birth). He didn't begin to seize until he was two or three. The first few times are so frightening! They feel like they go on for hours when its usually over in under two minutes. Crash was put on phenobarbitol which was great at combatting the seizures, but I don't recall if the drug had an effect on Crash's early death--liver failure by age five.

My parents' cat was also epileptic. She took phenobarb until she was 18, died peacefully of old age.
