I dont like you!! Keep in mind i just came on this site you are a veteran member with no life loser!!!!!"
I know that most Canadians posting here on FR could do 100% better while half awake, with both eyes shut while distracted by something fascinating.
Paralyzed woman walks again after stem cell therapy
A South Korean woman paralyzed for 20 years is walking again after scientists say they repaired her damaged spine using stem cells derived from umbilical cord blood.
Hwang Mi-Soon, 37, had been bedridden since damaging her back in an accident two decades ago.
Last week her eyes glistened with tears as she walked again with the help of a walking frame at a press conference where South Korea researchers went public for the first time with the results of their stem-cell therapy.
They said it was the world's first published case in which a patient with spinal cord injuries had been successfully treated with stem cells from umbilical cord blood.
Though they cautioned that more research was needed and verification from international experts was required, the South Korean researchers said Hwang's case could signal a leap forward in the treatment of spinal cord injuries. The use of stem cells from cord blood could also point to a way to side-step the ethical dispute over the controversial use of embryos in embryonic stem-cell research.
"We have glimpsed at a silver lining over the horizon," said Song Chang-Hoon, a member of the research team and a professor at Chosun University's medical school in the southwestern city of Kwangju.
"We were all surprised at the fast improvements in the patient."
Under TV lights and flashing cameras, Hwang stood up from her wheelchair and shuffled forward and back a few paces with the help of the frame at the press conference here on Thursday.
"This is already a miracle for me," she said. "I never dreamed of getting to my feet again."
Medical research has shown stem cells can develop into replacement cells for damaged organs or body parts. Unlocking that potential could see cures for diseases that are at present incurable, or even see the body generate new organs to replace damaged or failing ones.
So-called "multipotent" stem cells -- those found in cord blood -- are capable of forming a limited number of specialised cell types, unlike the more versatile "undifferentiated" cells that are derived from embroyos.
However, these stem cells isolated from umbilical cord blood have emerged as an ethical and safe alternative to embryonic stem cells.
Clinical trials with embryonic stem cells are believed to be years away because of the risks and ethical problems involved in the production of embryos -- regarded as living humans by some people -- for scientific use.
In contrast, there is no ethical dimension when stem cells from umbilical cord blood are obtained, according to researchers.
Additionally, umbilical cord blood stem cells trigger little immune response in the recipient as embryonic stem cells have a tendency to form tumors when injected into animals or human beings.
For the therapy, multipotent stem cells were isolated from umbilical cord blood, which had been frozen immediately after the birth of a baby and cultured for a period of time.
Then these cells were directly injected to the damaged part of the spinal cord.
"Technical difficulties exist in isolating stem cells from frozen umbilical cord blood, finding cells with genes matching those of the recipient and selecting the right place of the body to deliver the cells," said Han Hoon, president of Histostem, a government-backed umbilical cord blood bank in Seoul.
Han teamed up with Song and other experts for the experiment.
They say that more experiments are required to verify the outcome of the landmark therapy.
"It is just one case and we need more experiments, more data," said Oh Il-Hoon, another researcher.
"I believe experts in other countries have been conducting similar experiments and accumulating data before making the results public."

Don't you love this...
could also point to a way to side-step the ethical dispute
As though those who opposed Embryonic are against all stem-cell research!
Geez, so ridiculous.
I was just reading that thread. Truth is, they've had better luck with umbilical and adult stem cells than with embryonic stem cells anyway. Funny how you never hear much about that. The socialists have just developed a lust for the blood of innocents.
Heck, I am old enough to have considered most of those as new-fangled inventions.
LOL! That would make you almost as old as Swervie.
Evenin' Pup. Did you have a nice Thanksgiving?
Libby your gonna need valium soon!! This foster Mom that your describing should be struck off the list. She's more harmful than helpful!! Appears to me that she's more concerned about how SHE feels and not about what her actions are doing to the kids. Cripes, suggest to your office management that they give her the boot or if you can make that decision, drop her and tell her why!! Years ago, David and I took in some troubled teens. First we took a couple of pregnant girls in through a group called "Birth Right". We saw them through their pregnancies and deliveries and the girl and the baby could stay with us for months if she chose to. The first girl broke my heart. She had the most beautiful little baby boy, who I watched be born in the case room. She named him Justin. I loved that baby. I wanted so much for her to stay longer as she had changed dramatically through the months she stayed with us and went to church etc. BUT she had had a relationship BEFORE she came to us, with an absolute criminal. He was wanted in 4 Provinces on outstanding warrants. I cried when she left with him. We heard from her only once after she left. Then we took in a couple of troubled teenage boys for a time. One did really well, graduated, got a job and soon had his own place and car. We talked to him fairly often. The other boy, left in the middle of the night, taking my VCR with him. He soon was in trouble with the Law. Then we took in a girl who had a Northern B.C. Indian mother and a german father. She was considered a Status Indian and got a lot of perks courtesy of us taxpayers. She had a son who was already 6.We enrolled him in school and within a month he was doing great. She was a beautiful girl but had an alcohol problem. She was actually in Hairdressing School with Marlise and Marlise brought her home. Annette and her son, Justin (yes another Justin) stayed with us for over a year. Justin just blossomed and Annette did well except for the odd weekend binge. She eventually decided to move back up North. Her we keep in touch with. We didn't take money from anyone with our charges. We did this as unto the Lord. We occasionally get a Xmas card or phone call from Annette. We didn't want her to leave either but she has done okay as far as we know. Then we took in a Vietnames boat couple. THAT was an experience. They lived with us for a year. Our Church paid for them to have their teeth fixed, get dewormed and other medical needs. These two had lived in a camp in Kuala Lampur until they could get to Canada. The conditions of that camp were undescribable. They then got jobs and their own place. Ended up moving to Vancouver where Trung became an Orthodontist and Lin became a Licensed Practical Nurse. They had a little girl but didn't keep in touch very long except to ask if we would take in her Sister so she could come to the Country. We said No. We were tired by this time and my own kids were needing a little more attention!! It's both a wonderful and demanding committment all at the same time. Sorry for the book!! LOL
Exactly, those 'Kbeckers have NO sense of humor at all. Angriest bunch you'll ever not want to meet.!!
OMG that plant pic is priceless!!
Yup!! he sounded pretty pathetic. A true angry frog!
Yep. Sounds about right. The foster parents that she left them with took the girls over to get their things and she told them she didn't know where most of the younger girls clothes were and she wasn't feeling up to looking for them. Most of the workers have had one issue or another with her, but I have a feeling these two incidents back to back are going to shut her down.
Yes, doing such things does have its rewards as well as its trials.I have to laugh about the Vietnamese boat couple. I supervised a group home for women and children years ago and at one time I had a woman from Vietnam who spoke very little English, despite being in this country for 10 years. Actually, I think her understanding of English was selective. At the same time, there was also a woman from Korea and her two kids. Both of these women had married American GI's and were going through a divorce. Things got insane at times. It was hard finding an interpreter who could speak Vietnamese and that little Korean woman, she had a heck of a nasty temper. There was never a dull moment.
The socialists are aghoulish lot they are always defending the darkside of things....
Arafat,Sadam,beheadings,partial-birth,,condoms,criminals rights etc
Well, things are quite here and I'm tired..
So goodnight once again, all...
