Berkeley, California.
If homeless folks abandon their shopping carts, no problem, the city will take care of the cart and its contents.
But that's not all!
People complained about vermin infesting the storage lot where the carts were being kept.
So, what does this bastion of liberalism undertake? Do they discard the shopping carts and their contents?
NO!
They spend--NO KIDDING!!--$8,200 for a 40-foot-long, 8-foot-wide refigerated container.
Yes, there's still more!!
The City of Berkeley is running a $7.5 million deficit, but no matter. Berkeley signs a five-year, $61,500 lease with Caltrans for land under the University Avenue overpass at Highway 80 for a place to put the container.
But that's not all, either!!
But there's still more!!!
The City of Berkeley PAID TO RUN POWER TO THE CONTAINER!!!
The estimated cost to deep freeze the material will be about $3,000/year!

Kay, I remember you telling me about your own personal connection with, I think, Jeff Gordon. When I first moved to Tennessee in 2002, I had no real knowledge of or real interest in NASCAR. Now I'm looking for other people at work to talk to about it and can't wait to see if Jimmie Johnson's awesome momentum carries him over the top in this season's last race on Sunday.
