KLOL, 101.1 FM announced Friday that station has changed formats. The station switched from a classic rock format to a Latino music format branded as Mega 101.
KLOL is now branded as Mega 101 FM. The station's web site was listed as under construction, but KLOL's former morning show hosts Walton and Johnson announced on their web site that they were informed Thursday night of the change.
The radio hosts stated on WaltonandJohnson.com that, "Thursday night Walton and Johnson were informed by lower-level management sources via a last-minute phone call that there would be no Walton and Johnson Show tomorrow. In it's place would be Hispanic music programs."
KLOL's tombstone...R.I.P.

LOL
Hanitty wasn't on delay. He was just on for 2 of his 3 hours.
Also means that Chris Baker goes from 4 hours to 2 hours. That's a demotion.
San Antonio will ALWAYS embrace Heavy Metal and Rap. In part because Mayor Henry Cisnaros BANNED such music from civic venues. They had the last laugh.
Also was suspicious the way the left pointed fingers at the Republicans in the 1990s saying they wanted to outlaw rock and roll.
Baker's competing against Rush? He's going to strive for center or maybe he'll abandon politics altogether as Alvin Van Black did.
It's been so long since I've heard 740's non-Hannity hours that I didn't even know that Sam Donaldson's daytime show had been cancelled.
I don't give a darn about KLOL changing, there's already an overabundance of lame worn-out rock stations, and the stuck-in-the-70's demographic is shrinking. But what they are doing to KTRH is why Clear Channel sucks to high heaven, and why I have no problem with the FCC limiting the number of stations any company can own in a single market. Deb Duncan will be 1-3 and Chris Baker(the best talk show host in Texas, by far) 3-7, which means KTRH is basically eliminating their news programming. Of course it already was a pathetic shell of itself after Clear Channel took over, spending 50% of their time on endless station promos, but it is a joke that a city the size of Houston won't have a single news station, just gab and music (bad enough that there's only a single mediocre sports station.) Hey Ken Charles, aren't you embarrassed to work for such a cheesy conglomerate?
World class city? What a joke.
Darn...I just discovered 790 and have been enjoying it alot. :(
It's not the fact that rock is off the air. The fact they replaced a major market station with foreign language is the surprise. The local news channel tonight said Hispanics is currently the largest population in Houston (34%). No problem on the face of it.
The problem is many of them are here illegally with makes them criminals. The police are told not to question anyones immigration status. The problem consequently compounds over loading our emergency rooms, charities and public schools.
I have no problem with foreigners who reside in America LEGALLY. The more the merrier but only if they follow the same rules as you and I on a daily basis. Next in line for the soap box.
The same is true in South Florida (aka Northern Cuba). Driving exams can be conducted in Spanish as well. I am so glad I moved. I've never been on the receiving end of that much hostility in my life.
Tape it. It WON'T last.
Paul Berlin, who is in the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME (and aged 81), will probably retire for good.
Also Frank & Friends (Friday 6:30-8:30) is a real good show.
If Hispanics are the largest population in Houston. NO MORE set asides.
If "white folk" are a minority, give them some protections now. Only fair in a bigoted parity system.
Okay, I'm officially pissed.
I turned my radio to KLOL last night to give a listen, and was unpleasantly surprised to hear Tejano music on the air.
WTF? My W&J are gone!! That's the only radio show I have ever listened to, and liked enough to tune in just about every day for.
Why oh why do the powers that be ruin a good thing?????
Houston has 16 spanish stations. Now they have the best FM signal in Houston.
But I'm mourning the loss of W&J The only good morning show with the balls to say pretty much whatever they wanted.
KTRH starting to replace news with shows like Sam Donaldson was the start of their downfall. Well that and replacing news with nonstop promo overkill. They spend more time describing how great their weather reporting is than actually giving any weather information. Used to be whenever a storm was coming in whoever was in studio would look at the radar and describe where it was, intensity, how it was moving, etc., very useful information, especially for those on the road. No more, now they just plug and play their farmed out Weather Channel fool in Atlanta who at best gives a generic forecast changed maybe 3 times a day, and oh yeah, "Its 91 at Bush, 91 downtown, and 90 in Galveston." Is it raining, flooding, hailing at any of these places? Who knows, but thank God I can know that it is now 91 and not 92. It doesn't require a high school diploma for someone to glance at a radar and in 15 seconds describe what they see. Idiots.
Dan Patrick is great, but Chris Baker is hilarious and a good conservative. Both serve a role, and Baker's style is more crossover, which brings more persons over to the GOP side. Patrick is strategic, get things done in the trenches , Baker is grass roots recruiting.
There's a reason Baker has shot up to number 1 in his time slot, and it sure as heck isn't because KPRC is a quality station. I generally like Ken Charles(though the original purge wasn't handled well and unfunny Roger Gray stinks), but he's stuck with cheesy promo overhype Clear Channel. Chris Baker rules!
Eh, while I think illegals and their impacts ARE a problem, theres also seems to be an "Irish need not apply" overkill tone to a lot of these threads. So what if 4 or 5 FM stations are Spanish, the vast majority are still English, there are still 4 FM country stations, a ton more of all formats in English on satellite radio, and where's the outrage at the Vietnamese language station? The boat people have assimilated well (ok, so some GOP'er's in Heflin's district may be a bit sensitive at the moment...) and Hispanics are converting to the GOP much faster than previous immigration groups. One of the reasons the Houston economy is thriving is all the ethnic subeconomies and new small businesses sprouting up. Lots of dollars flowing through those west side warehouses and strip center storefronts.
I have a friend in that part of Florida still fighting it, but she will have a stroke if she doesn't get out. I've been planning my relocation. The problem is I like the landscape and climate of the Southwest, so moving to New Mexico or Texas would not be enough improvement. I'm looking at Utah.
