The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Argh. Went to do laundry, since otherwise I can't pack, and someone else had come five minutes before and taken both machines. It'll be noon before I'm done... sigh...

Good morning people!

I could listen to Billy ALL DAY.

It pleased me that FINALLY in ROTK he and Dom talked more about their character developement, something that I missed tremendously in the first two (unless I just didnt click on the right feature...). I was also appreciative of the remarks Sir McKellan made about expanding the friendship Gandalf had with Pippin. He said something about how the scenes he did with Pippin were done in a bit of a haphazard way (my words, not his) that it was a point of frustration to him in not being able to set the right tone of that relationship...words to that effect at least. I went "THANK YOU!" because even with this extension, I felt Gandalf was WAY too harsh. Perhaps I am unable to take off the rose-colored glasses when it comes to that part of LOTR, but I have always seen the friendship of Pippin and Gandalf as two people who get a huge kick out of each other and believe in each other despite their foibles. I like what Billy and Sir McKellan had to say and it made me feel better.

But I still wish Gandalf hadn't knocked Pippin aside when he was talking with Denethor. Completely uncharacteristic of Gandalf.

The peppermints are sweetened with Equal, but the candy melts are sweetened with mannitol. I'm gonna make some for one of the guys who played St. Nicholas for my Girl Scouts for their 'Pictures with St. Nicholas' fundraiser. We made almost $200!!

The guys are friends of mine from the Parish, and they used to be St. Nick for the Holly Fair every year when I used to chair it. They are not connnected to the Girl Scout troop in any way, they just do it as a favor for me. One of the guys is doing a low carb thing, so last year I made him some sugar free chocolates with chopped toasted hazelnuts. I wanted to do something different this year. I'm going to call the other guy's wife to find out if there is something he particularly likes.

Just finished the Chocolate Chip cookies. I think I made about 8 dozen!! I'm taking 3dz.for the Friendly house party, and one dz. each to the two custodians who are so nice to hang the big wreaths for me (and take them down after Christmas) each year. I'll take pics of the wreaths and post them later.

Those are so cute! Or I could, when I get back on Atkins, bring bacon for lunch every day...

I know my complaint about certain foreign students probably sounds so horrible, but it's true. The Indian students - well, the Hindi ones, which is most of what we have - integrate beautifully. I'm friends with several of them already. The Chinese students mostly stick together, because there are enough of them and most of them don't speak English very well, but they don't bother you. Other foreign students... well, there's a very nice Mongolian guy and a couple Europeans, and they have given me no trouble.

But I was warned by professors before I even came that there are certain segments - mostly Middle-Eastern Muslims - who just don't work the way we do. As long as they're just people in my classes or who I pass in the halls, that's ok, but it worries me that I might be supposed to be working with someone who comes from a culture that considers women to be, well, sub-human.

Fortunately the other two guys are still in awe of having a female coworker and will probably straighten out any problems for me without my even knowing... I'm just borrowing trouble.

Wife actually bought one of those last year for school stuff.

A local discount store had a Fellowes binding machine for sale for $15 last year! I got 6 boxes of combs in various sizes for $1 each! So I'm ready to do some binding whenever I need to do it! ;o)

One more week. Then I should be able to get to see it.

You're not alone, Rosie. I won't be seeing it until Christmas, myself.

SSQ and I watched a lot of PBS when we were first married. We got used to the various accents from all over Great Britain; Scotland, Ireland, Yorkshire, Wales, North Umberland, whatever!! "All Creatures Great and Small" was one that introduced some really THICK accents, and they were fun to hear.

I stayed up until 3:00 a.m. watching ROTK EE last night, it was so awesome; there were so many great scenes that were not in the theatrical version and I can't say a single one was gratuitous. But the best by far was Faramir and Eowyn, it was played so beautifully. But I wanted more, more more! Guess I better head to LOTR fanfiction for more, if I can find any decently written stuff.

Used to work for a british marine survey company, so I got to hear some really neat accents there as well.

Funny thing I discovered about the particular personalities that showed up in that office : the ENGLISH were the nicest, funniest, sweetest guys. There were two SCOTTISH contractors who had real pissy attitudes, especially towards me once they found out that I was the " Jill Friday" of the department. I recall one general meeting where we were all sitting there discussing their projects and one of them turned to my boss and asked "why she (meaning me) couldn't do the folding etc" for their project. My boss, a very nice gentleman from London, immediately jumped to my defense and told them that I was working on timely projects of my own, and my duties overrode theirs as far as folding maps was concerned.

They didn't like that too much.

If I had known about Jack Aubrey at the time, I would have declared my boss to be just like him.

I went to the post office to stop my mail... dropped a package in the mail... look for it after Christmas, I'd guess.

Fruits Basket... You'll have to ship it all back to me when you're done, of course, but I think you'll agree it's worth it!

Tell the bothers to watch Fruits Basket with you. Even if FMwS is too shoujo, everyone should watch Fruits Basket.

DHL says my DVD is with the delivery courier. I should have it this afternoon.

Depending on whether or not Jr. starts watching it before I get home I ~may~ be able to chat view after Luke is in bed. 9-ish EST or so.

I won't order like this again.

I love what little I've heard of the music, too. A lot.

Ooh, it should be here in time for the New Year's holiday, I'm guessing! Woo-hoo!

Yes, it should.... and it's a lovely little series. Mostly lovely. A few "um..." moments, and some just plain weirdness, and the strangest metaphor I've ever seen. Lovely.
