The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

OK, passed 53k, which makes 2k for today, though I didn't make up at all for yesterday's slackin' off. But I'm getting there! One more minor adventure to write and then loose ends to tie up. Probably at least 10k left, but that's less than a week's worth if I'm dedicated.

I kinda feel silly putting this much work into something that will likely end on the dungheap, figuratively speaking, within a few months. But I guess it's a good learning experience.

And I guess it's time to go to bed! I can sleep in tomorrow so I stayed up a bit, but I'm getting dumber by the second...

All right! I'm cheering for you! Remember my offer to beta-read for you.

You should see if maybe Suzi wants to carpool, too. It could be a really massive road-trip.

Should I send you what I have so far?

There's one chapter that's thoroughly embarassing. It's something I wrote just to get it down and plan to extensively edit later. The rest is probably ready for basic typo correction and such...

Well, I won't have any time to read it tomorrow. Just send it whenever you like, and I'll work at it in between studying for finals this week.

Anyone still up?

Just finished FotREE...Going to do TTTEE sometime this weekend preparatory to RotKEE on Tuesday. Yeah, I'm going to, even if I have to work 10-12 hours that day.

Credits for FotREE still playing...all the music ever written for the pic, I think...

The c/r wasn't really into it, having a new toy...a USB gadget that turns his laptop and a USB external HD into a DVR....busy now trying to edit the ads out of coupla Jimmy Neutron eps for kids of his friends...

I'll crash soon.

You could start 'afterschooling' her! It doesn't have to be anything major, just get her used to the idea of you directing her education. You can give her some little extra things to do that are in the WTM time frame; she'd be in the Medieval era right now. Look up some art, listen to some music or find some interesting stories for her to read. The WTM book will have reading lists for her age level. You can jump right in in the middle, and it won't be a problem. Remember, she will still be doing these time frames again in high school, in much greater depth, so you don't have to cram so much in at this time.

Christmas time is a great time to listen to some medieval music and read about the dancing that was done at this time. If you can find a concert of medieval Christmas music, try to go . We saw a performance of a group called the 'Waverly Consort' many years ago in NJ, and it was about this time of year. Just lovely music and dance done in period costumes. Check the library to see if they have any tapes or CDs of a group called 'Boston Camerata' or many some other group doing medieval music.

Most of all, make it FUN!

Here's Osage's friend Ferret with one.

Is that why it's called a Ferret Bow?

Way cool that you built them, Sam. We need a picture or two!

And listening to a Scottish singer whose voice I just love.

Who is it? I love Andy M. Stewart and Archie Fisher.

Love the family letter, but we need a picture of Castle Stormhands all decked out for Christmas!!! Take one now, and use it for next year's letter! And don't forget the flamingo!

Sigh. Late night (early morning?) funkle. Waiting for some Rocky Road Brownies to finish baking. Was out late helping our Girl Scout troop do Holiday Babysitting. Folks bring their little darlins to the Parish Hall and we watch them while the grown ups go out to eat, party, shop, whatever. People have really enjoyed it, and have looked forward to their nights out.

See y'all later on in the morning.

Very nice Christmas letter!

I was drawn away tonight..... into the mother of all family mini-dramas.

What's been happening in here?
