In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
scrutinize \SKROO-tuh-nyze\ verb
1. to examine closely and minutely *
2. to make a scrutiny
*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.
Example sentence:
Signora Bernasconi scrutinized the painting, said to be by Fra Angelico, and declared it a fake.
Did you know?
A close look at the etymology of "scrutinize" reveals that the word stems from the Latin verb "scrutari" (meaning "to search" or "to examine"), which in turn probably comes from "scruta" (meaning "trash," or more specifically "a mixture of worthwhile articles and trash"). "Scrutari" gave us the noun "scrutiny" in the 15th century, a word which originally meant "a formal vote" and then "an official examination of votes." "Scrutinize" retained reference to voting, with the meaning "to examine votes," at least into the 18th century -- and even today in Britain a "scrutineer" is a person who counts votes.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Per Drudge we are up to 2,000 fraudlent votes in Philly. Gee I wonder who those were for? lol.
I have been on business trips and watched election results on the tv in my hotel room on election day in 1994, 1996, 2000, and 2002. On all four occasions I would have been disenfranchised if not for early voting. By the way, in 1994 I think I did a naked celebration dance when the results came in that Dubya had defeated Ann Wrinkles for Governor of Texas.
You are right, SNL lost most of the charm years ago - I see it occasionally - one bright spot this year is they are making as much fun of kerry as they are of President Bush - which tells me the leftist writers are not impressed with him.
I am OK, with Provisional Ballots, and Early voting.
And I think beyond first time voters, Photo ID, should be allowed to be asked for, but not required.
Voting Precincts are fairly small, in the Number of Citizens they serve, and as long as the RECORDKEEPING is done accurately, Fraud should not exist on any statistically significant level.
The Fraud is in the Keeping of the Rolls, and that is where serious reform, and action needs to be taken.
Motor Voter has to go, and it is one issue that will pi$$ me off if a Republican majority COngress, and president don;t address it.
There are enough widespread tales of fraud in this election to provide political cover for accurate reforms.
And the legislation should be being written RIGHT NOW, to bring up Immediately AFTER the election, to minimize the media howling.
That the Dept. of Justice did not go into Philly and check every voter on the rolls after the 2000 election, is negligence at best.
FOX reporting -- four machines with over 1500 votes found on them in Philly -- state RNC reporting they have demanded the machines be impounded and replaced with new machines and the four be investigated.
DA for philly claiming machines are ok, not tampered with.
absentee ballots work everywhere else, why not TX? the northeast seems to be the only ones left with no early voting.
kerry already has his army of crooked lawyers in all the swing states to challenge the results wherever he comes up short. His plan is to succeed where algore failed to steal the election in 2000. It kind of reminds me of the disclaimer from the Cialis commercial (see tagline)
i told xsSIL to look to see if xsNIECE, who voted absentee from Malone College, was marked off on the rolls and she was gratified to see this AM that her name was indeed crossed off.
I suppose in the absense of "early" voting I could have voted absentee. I'm not sure how that process works and whether or not you can get an absentee ballot on short notice.
xshub spoke, on Sat, to a Pub lawyer who has been dispatched to Phila, so we are equally on guard.
The difference is the pubbies are there to try to prevent fraud, the dems are there to perpetrate and perpetuate it. (Did you like my tagline?)
it works elsewhere, like i said. the potential for fraud, to me, vastly outweighs the convenience factor. maybe if you lived in a state that was more riddled with Dem fraud you would see that, but TX is probably pretty safe from that. Can you imagine in PA, early voting? more time for the union goons to pump out fictitious voters. i hate to say it, but i fear that my dearly departed union belonging Dem Dad is probably voting for Kerry this year. and as i told xsSIL, since my dad's FINAL address before he passed away was my brother's address in OH, he may be voting for Kerry THERE TOO!!!!
Good news!!!!!!!!
I went out without a handbag last night, so I duble checked this morning to make sure I had put my ID back in from my pants pocket
I would hope you were kidding.
You better believe it!!!!!!!
I have never figured out what some women find attractive in him. Even before learning what a real sleeze he is I found him very UNattractive.
LOL!!!!! I took a shower after I got off the phone.
I was just IMing with a friend in Dover (a dem) and he commented upon how some people will do anything to win an election, regardless of party.
My response was: since it's Philly, we can pretty much figure out which party, can't we?
his response: Unfortunately.........
even he's not that stupid.
