Eleventh Thread: Wedding Edition: The Hobbit Hole XI - No One Admitted Except on Wedding Business!
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, |
Still round the corner there may wait |
Home is behind, the world ahead, |
BTW, something important happened today.
My sister was given a promotion into management today! Great news, right?
Well, now she's my boss. Yup. She is now a Payroll Supervisor even though she's never run a single payroll.
This, of course, has created some resentment in the Payroll Department. Add to that, one of my co-workers who is also a good friend, was trying for that same position. She has been in payroll for over 6 years and knows just about everything when it comes to payroll.
Well, now she's hurt that she wasn't chosen and although no grudges are held against my sister as a person, that ~feeling~ is still in the air. And she has told me privately that she will be looking for another job which is a tremendous loss to the department.
I'm very happy for my sister. She had a tyrant for a boss and is glad to be out from under her, but she understands how the payroll folks feel and worries that they won't take her seriously.
Add to that, she has been told that effective immediately, she can no longer go out to lunch with me and Anna (her best friend who also works with us) or even go out for smoke breaks together because it will look like she's playing favorites.
And they also said that she will be put into a cubicle on the opposite side of the department from me to avoid any type of situation where we spend too much time together.
Sorry so long, but I know this is going to change everything at work....and not necessarily for the better.
I'll have to work twice as hard as everyone else just to prove that anything I acheive was by my own merit. *sigh*
That is going to be a tenuous situation for awhile.... Hope everyone adjusts well to it and it is a good thing for you!
I'm sure the two of you will handle it well. The trick will be giving the others no cause to believe your personal relationship is leaking into the professional realm.
I hope so, but I truly believe that this will be a long and difficult transition for the department.
If my co-worker had gotten the position, there would have been cause for celebration since it proves that there is growth opportunity in payroll.
But this is the THIRD time in a row that a supervisory position in our department that has been filled by someone outside of the department, so the hostility is growing.
I feel terrible for my sister because a lot of that anger will be misdirected towards her, even though no one holds it against ~her~ personally.
I think we better keep some popcorn on hand!. At least she knows about the undercurrent. It ~might~ help.
I know you're right. We haven't had any problems so far.
It'll be an adjustment, but it'll work itself out.
Got some series coding done... not that it works, but oh well... so it's Trigun time!
ecurbh - Thanks for posting
2JM - very nice letter; we're glad you took the initiative to write them. Well done.
Definitely popcorn worthy!
She trying to formulate a way to address the undercurrent in a supportive and understanding way, without seeming condescending or superficial about it.
I told her to just be herself. We all know and love her when she worked in CTS, so eventually that'll overshadow the whole mini-drama we're dealing with now. *sigh*
It still sucks lemons though.
Corin - sounds the BIL has a prob stepping up to the plate. Glad it worked out it in the end.
re; the rehab - seems to me when a person can't get out of bed unassisted they ain't rehabbed yet. Good luck in dealing with SW et al.
Lordy...you have far more than your fair share of work related mini-dramas, Ruthy! Hope that all works out...but it sounds tough.
Rosie - one freeze doesn't mean you can't transplant; but apparently fall gets to winter pretty early up there. The good side of gravel is that it should discourage moles and gophers from getting your bulbs. In fact 'Garden Gate' had an article on making the 'ideal' bed for bulbs, and it included a gravel layer - along with a mulch and compost layer.
Yes, PE is also a HAM. We need to get elf-boy reading better before he tests. Great idea about getting him a HAM license though. It is especially good for science/physics. PE is already working on morse with him. You will have to tell me how your mom had y'all learn the material so I can help elf-boy (he is only 6).
Yeah, it goes from frost to frozen in a few weeks. Last few years, I've not gotten them in before the ground froze. This year, hopefully they'll be OK.
The gravel is REALLY gravelly. I'm hoping just digging up some of it and putting soil on top will work! Plus working in mulch or fertilizer of some sort.
Rosie; sounds like a plan - the topsoil and mulch will help. A good watering with will help settle in the soil. Good luck on getting them in before The Big Freeze. :-)
I'm optimistic by nature, so I know it'll sort itself out in the long run.
My selfish reason for being bummed out is that I enjoy a great working relationship with the other reps in my department and now I'm afraid of being labelled as the "boss's sister" and thus, left out of the loop when it comes to the joking around, ragging on management sessions we have now and again.
I know it's a matter of time before I walk into a room one day and everyone will stop talking when they see it's me, rather than "C'mere, we gotta tell ya this!". :-(
Namarie.
Faversham.
I want to see pictures of the bulbs next spring...
