I met a homeschooling mom and her nine-year old this morning. She told me she began homeschooling after her son tested out of kindergarten (when he was 5) and she was hesitant to place him in second grade with 8-year olds. The school agreed that possibly he should not go into second grade, but told her to "keep him home and not teach him anything for a year." I was totally floored! The child is obviously very bright and thanks to mostly lurking on this board, I was able to intelligently discuss homeschooling with her. So many thanks for the conversations.

Yeah, look into the air cleaner. The bathroom remodel likely exacerbated the problem, but pet dander is another possible culprit, and that won't go away when the bathroom's done. ;o)

**Shaking head in amazement** And these folks call themselves educators? They obviously weren't interested in the CHILD, except to make sure he fit into their system. I'm glad the mom had the strength to take up the challenge herself! And I'm pleased our conversations have helped you, too!

Just got my 19" LCD monitor....at work. I asked them if I could take it home but no such luck. The Red Sox and Yankees are playing: it feels like they've been playing for 24 hours straight.

Heh! I took a bit of a different approach. My pediatrician suggested I get Matthew tested, gave me the name of a doctor that did the testing. He was three at the time. She told me "If he tests above the 90th percentile, you should consider putting him in the Tulsa School for Gifted Children." He tested 96.

I tell ya, I cried. I just cried. I thought "I feel like I'm supposed to homeschool him, but how on EARTH am I gonna teach this child?" I seriously considered putting him in the school, but it kept coming to me that they would teach him things that were possibly contrary to what I wanted him to learn (religious, political).

This scripture came to me: "Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6"

I just really decided that God had put it in my heart to homeschool before we even had Matthew, God would take care of the how. So...despite withering criticism from my mom and no support from others except Steve, I waited till Matthew turned 4, skipped kindergarten and started him in the first grade.

Oh, and I got a different pediatrician!

We've got an alphabet thing going on...we went down to the river and let Al, Ben, Calvin, Dick, and Ed go this morning. I just now caught Fred.

He'll do better with you- he has much more freedom to pursue his interests safely. Gifted schools and gifted programs are fast and furious and the competition is cutthroat. The culture in those types of programs isn't very nurturing. Once you teach him *how* to learn you don't have to worry about teaching him every tidbit of trivia. He'll be able to do that for himself (which is what all kids do anyway) and he'll end up being a better person for it.
