The Hobbit Hole XVI - Still round the corner there may wait...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Still round the corner there may wait...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Morning.... after some morning meetings, ecurbh and I are going to work on the new stalls for the barn. They've got a temporary setup out of the rain... But their good behavior to stay in the makeshift stalls won't last forever. For the pony anyway.

Hm...or something along those lines.

Which would mean introducing a prince of some sort, or at least a boy. Maybe one with more courage than sense. ;-)

You're very gracious; I could say a lot of things but I won't, either.

At least I know who that was...

I can't remember if the boss is out this week on vacation. Guess I'll know in half an hour... just about time to walk out the door. Ugh! It's Monday.

Ugh! It's Monday.

Tell me about it! ;-)

But I almost have the first chapter of the storybook written, in spite of the demons from the Mac world. (Or should that be daemons?)

You could put Mac demons into the story...

Could you send me your recipe for the bagels? I don't like them too chewy, so it would probably work out great for me. I'd like to experiment with whole wheat flour and a seven grain mix that I have for breads.

I gots a pot roast in my slow cooker! It sure is smellin good!! What size crock pot do you have? The kids got me a 6 qt. size for Christmas a couple of years ago. I thought it would be too large, but it's worked out great cause I can have some good leftovers!

I just stirred my sourdough starter. It smells heavenly!

I plan on making sourdough biscuits like Gus makes in Lonesome Dove. In a dutch oven and everything.

I guess I prob'ly oughta get the jedis involved in this...they might find it interesting and learn something from it!

Crockpots are the greatest invention known to womankind! I use mine at least once a week. It's so great to come home and have a yummy dinner all ready for me...

Later this week I think I'll make tacos again. Absolutely my favorite crock-pot meal, tacos.

As usual...I don't have a recipe. I know how much liquid I used, but not how much flour, so I suppose that wouldn't work for the bread machine?

But...basically I used two cups of warm water, about a tablespoon of honey just to get the yeast going, two tablespoons (or maybe almost three) of Smart Balance, two eggs, a cup or so of rye flour, and the rest whole wheat. I also threw in a little flaxmeal and some powdered milk to add a little more nutritional value, but that's not really necessary.

To make it into bagels, you let it rise once, take it out, form them by rolling them into sticks about seven or eight inches long (bigger if you like big ones) and pinching the ends together, let them rest for a few minutes before boiling them in salted water for two minutes a side, and then bake them at 425 for 25 minutes. Easy, really.

I'm tempted to blow off co-op today...I hate getting out in this kind of weather...and it's a long drive.

That's one of the reasons I never joined any sort of co-op or Homeschool group. I didn't want to feel like I HAD to be going somewhere.

Cup o coffee? I found some nice Pumpkin Spice coffee at the grocery store. I didn't come in decaf, so I only use a couple of scoops for a pot, but it still gives it a nice flavor.

My crockpot is hugh...must be a six quart. I really would prefer something half that size, but I'm waiting until I see one at the thrift shop or a garage sale. Or get one for Christmas or my birthday. Hm...wonder if I could bribe a brother into getting me one for my birthday, or if I'm too late?

I like leftovers, but that's a bit much. I'm gonna freeze most of today's meal, but I hate to have to do that every time I use it.

I need to find my old sourdough starter recipe! With winter coming, it'd be great to make some good, strong sourdough rye once in awhile, and pancakes and biscuits, too.

Catch is that you really gotta use it fairly frequently. It's a commitment. Like caring for a critter. ;-) We actually NAMED the starter we had for awhile when I was little...
