The Hobbit Hole XIV - Hill and Water Under Sky

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Oh...and the body has to be buried in 24 hours.

No casket or anything is even needed.

Amazing, huh?

From what I understand, family burials are permitted in most states...it's the funeral home/cemeteries that have their own "regulations".

I've been around death and funeral homes enough that bodies don't bother me. But I still wouldn't want to watch or participate in the embalming process.

I dunno 2J. Might be a "market" for that. Certainly would have to consider health regulations, etc. I just dunno.

I've recently told the wife that I'm pretty sure I want to be cremated. She's committed to leaving everything "usable" of hers to science (the medical hospital here).

So I figger since we won't be side by side "together" that cremation is a real option.

Once I'm gone, I don't want the boys to have to live with the guilt of not "visiting" my grave. I understand some folks need to do that, and it's fine. But I get pangs of guilt everytime I go home and don't go to the cemetary to "visit" my dad.

I don't want my boys to have to feel that way.

Heh, buy land and plant 'em there...

Is it reeeally twisted of me to say, "I just figured out a reason why you need that PT Cruiser?"

Unofficially, I'm down 7 lbs. on South Beach.

Congratulations! That's after just a week?

I shoulda done more hiking this year. But I'm the queen of procrastinators...by the time I get around to it, the snow'll be flyin'.

Of course, this year, I'm planning on getting snowshoes, so I'll have no excuse.

That's what they remind me of, anyway.

I need a scale. I am really seriously on the diet starting tomorrow... and I have no scale anywhere.

I feel a little funny about selling homemade CDs, especially when we weren't the recording folks on most, but maybe.

Are you kidding? Every small concert I've been to in the last 10 years, the artist has had his or her CDs in the back for sale. Many of those were self-produced. That's the beauty of CDs!! I'm with Bilbo on this one!

I need a new one, but I'm too cheap to get one.

The one I have is almost impossible to read without bending down, which throws the reading, and not digital, which'd be nice. Especially if I could start measureing half pounds...

But a decent one costs, what, thirty or forty bucks?

I've seen self-produced...but usually with an actual CD maker / stamper rather than just CD-R discs. But if'n we could do it...hey, that'd be nifty!

I started last Tuesday. That's what has shown up from last Wednesday. Now I just need about 20 more weeks like this...

I've been reading up and the services that I might perform would be:

Preparing the body for viewing (bathing, dressing).
This is no big deal...I've done it lots with people in the hospital that have passed away. Got the body ready for the family to view before the funeral home whisks them away. I always considered it such a priviledge...a gift to the family...not just my job.

Making sure all paperwork was filed with the county.
Death certificate, you know.

Obtaining a burial spot
Helping the family find and purchase a cemetery plot that will allow a home funeral and an unembalmed body in a rustic casket.

There's bound to be more I could do and I could do everything on a sliding-scale fee. Say the family wants to prepare the body for viewing...I could instruct them, for a much reduced fee.

I dunno, I'm going to check out Wal-Mart. Later in the week, when I've lost some water-weight. ;-0

Ooops! Got to run!

Leaf moot sounds nice. When we get the addition done, we could have it at our house. We're within a two hour drive of most of the NH sites for day trips. The Flume at Franconia Notch is a wonderful place for a day trip and hike; not too strenuous and gorgeous in the Fall!

Too bad it doesn't work that way. But I guess slow and steady is better'n nothing.

Great news on the pre-school. Does your wife's school have a kindergarten program? That might be a good transition time if you decided to homeschool after that. Luke would still have his friends from 'school' as well as new homeschooled ones.

The full version of Nero lets you do that, too, I think.

We'd have to come up with a picture and such, though. And we have not much more than two weeks, if'n we're gonna have these for that concert. Then again, we seem to do all preparation / practicing / set list making / etc. at the last minute, and it's never stopped us before. Just annoys the heck out of me, that's all...

You may be on to something. But if it's like chickens and whistles, we'd probably just prefer you tell us about it rather than post pictures...

Seriously tho, some folks might think this is a valuable service. I remember when Papa died the concern was whether there would be enough funds to cover the cost of everything. He had enough insurance (and enough more for Nana to have a bit stashed away). But we didn't know that at first and spent some time checking credit card balances.

Funeral homes are quite spendy.
