You've got the "other forum" tagline, too...
I mentioned a couple manga earlier with your daughter in mind... thinking about it, I'm not sure "Fruits Basket" would be perfectly appropriate. It's mostly a lovely, sweet story about coming-of-age and such (with random transformations and a zodiac curse, but that's beside the point) but there are some bits that may be slightly inappropriate... something that may be an implied homosexual crush, for instance, though it's hard for me to tell.
"Rurouni Kenshin", though, should be ok. It's violent sometimes, but very low actual death count, since Kenshin doesn't kill people any more. And it's very historically accurate, so you or she might end up learning something about Meiji-era Japan. It made watching "The Last Samurai" much more interesting for me because I knew the political situtation in the background.
If you like, I'll think about any other manga that might be acceptable. "Ranma" is fairly harmless but gets repetitive and the art's not that great. Oh, yeah, and if they sell it in shrink-wrap, they usually mean it... don't get Battle Royale... ;-)
What the heck is IKEA?
Sigh... it's the scantily-clad bit that annoys me. Why can't women be cool crime fighters while fully clothed?
Besides, I like comics featuring nicely drawn young men rather than nicely drawn young women, but that's just me... ;-) (My sisters and I are having a little bit of difficulty remembering that Edward Elric is fifteen. He doesn't look fifteen...)
You've never shopped at a giant warehouse of cheap Swedish furniture? Man, you haven't lived!
They used to have the best commercials on tv, 10 years ago.
A money pit.
(said vith a sveedish accent)
It's like a furniture store/amusement park. I hate most furniture stores, but IKEA is cool. Much of the influence (particularly when they first got here) is Scandanavian.
We got all the furniture for Jr's room there. Desk, shelves, cool light:
I'm sure the target audience of the Dirty Pair think they're pretty cool.
Thanks for passing on what you know about the different Manga/Anime titles. I don't mind the violence, it is the nudity/sexuality I want to stay away from. But from your description Fruit Baskets should be ok.
That's right! Jim Robinson, founder of FRee Republic will be in town to party with us! And his wife Sheila, and son Chris, as well!
You guys will have a good time. JimRob and family are nice folks.
"Dude, I've had a countdown to departure in my tagline for, oh, a month."
Sigh--I knew I was opening myself up for that :) Yeah, I've been following the countdown, but I didn't know if your countdown was inclusive or not, hence my question. I'm not *that* unobservant. . . :)
"I think Cartoon Network shows anime late at night, have you checked into that?"
I have, but it's not the same as *real* anime. . ."Cowboy Bebop" is pretty good, but I've seen almost all the episodes now. Most of the other stuff they show seems to be various "Dragon Ball Z" spinoffs. No "Kenshin" or anything of that quality, at least not that I've seen.
It doesn't very often! That big of water was probably in the Straight of Juan de Fuca...
"er...actually it should be Lobelia"
Doh! I guess I was mixing "Lobelia" and "Lotho" together in my head :)
What's so funny about saying "LSB"?--or do I want to know. . .
How does one approach an architect with my Little House in the Desert for Mom project? I spent a very frustrating day on the phone trying to find an architect who 1) does single-family residential 2) knows anything about 'sustainable' design or whatever the buzzword is, and 3) is willing to work a project so small. One smarmy chap actually said, "How is your house going to benefit us?" I'm feeling frustrated. You'd think someone would snap it up.
Fruits Basket is the only "Shoujo" (girls) manga I like. The first three volumns are published, with the fourth coming out in August.
Oh, yeah - an anime you might like is "Lost Universe". Ever heard of Slayers? LU is by the same people. It's a science fiction anime, 26 episodes, comic but the storyline eventually gets dark. One translation I've seen has a nasty tendency to translate curse words as strongly as possible, though. Otherwise I'd recommend it whole-heartedly as a good family anime... it was the first anime I saw all of, which is why I haven't really thought of it in a while.
Let's try to keep this a family thread...
I dunno ladies. Should we tell him?
CN used to broadcast Kenshin. That's where I first encountered the show. Amazingly I saw the potential in the series beneath the bad dubbing (I know, you liked the dubbing, but English-Kaoru's constant "KENSHIN!" got on my nerves, and the guy who dubbed Sano sounded like a moron).
The big problem was that to get past the censors, they had to hack the Kyoto-arc to death. Bad metaphor - what they did was remove any scene of anyone being hacked to death, or being dead, or being wounded to the point of death, or saying "death", or looking like they might cause someone else's death...
Interesting--Eclipse and Dark Horse, not bad :) BTW I didn't know Dark Horse had a Japanese branch--that's kinda neat.
