The Hobbit Hole XIII - Let them pass! Let them pass!
See our freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net home page! ^

Posted on 07/13/2004 9:49:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Let them pass! Let them pass!
(Note to dwarves, this is only meant figuratively)

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Thanks for the ping, Jen!

Pippin, for pricing, Overstreet is the industry standard (unless something has changed since I got out of touch with things--Bear?). I'm part of a Marvel Comics group on Yahoo that you might try posting some of that on:

Oldschool Marvel Fans

I might be interested in the Dark Shadows issue myself--that's based on the TV show, right?

Thanks, Fedora!

That DS comic book is based on the TV series, it features Barnabas Collins.

It's cover price was 15 cents it is dated August 1971.

I paid $2.75 for it about 10 years ago.

it's a Gold Key comic book and in a protevtice plastic cover.

:)

My copy of The God Makers (book-- I understand there's a corresponding video) has been on a tour around the country as different friends have asked to borrow it...I don't think it's been here since last September!

I liked that show and I like Gold Key from that period so I'm interested in that. I sent you a private message with my email if you're interested in selling it.

I'm pretty good with history, and I'm especially proud of my knowledge of WWII. However, "pride goeth before a fall" and I'd like y'all to check me out on a something I've put together.

It's a quiz: the answers are hidden until highlighted. Are they correct?

1. What was the only country to attack and/or invade US territory? A: Japan

2. What was the first country invaded by US forces? A: Algeria

2a (Bonus!): What country's soldiers were defending that location, and were thus the first ground forces engaged by the US in WWII? A: France (Vichy)

3:What was the only country, with which the US was at war, whose hostile shores were not invaded by US ground forces? A: Japan

Got it, thanks! Hmmm--putting our brains together is almost as nefarious as teaming up TV Batman's four arch-villains--it may already be too late for the world. . .

Yes, the Overstreet Price Guide is the standard for pricing comics. You might be able to find a copy in a large bookstore such as Barnes & Noble or Borders, in the "collectibles" section. However, I don't recommend buying it; it costs something like $20-$25 new, and it's only worth getting if collecting and selling comics is a real hobby for you. Otherwise, just make a list of what you have and take it into the store with you, so you can look them up. ;)

Alternatively, you can look for a comic book store in your area. They should be able to help you figure out what you have and what it's worth; they may even offer to buy them from you. However, if they do, they'll probably only give you 50% of the actual value; they have to resell it, after all, and can't charge more than the guide price.

A third option is selling them on eBay for whatever you can get. If you're not familiar with eBay though it can be kind of intimidating.

And, I killed it. :(

My motive with that quiz is to cause thought in those who would protest "Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11!"

That may be true, but the GWOT isn't about revenge for 9-11 any more than WWII was revenge for 12/7, and there were at least as many good reasons Iraq became a target in 2003 as Algeria did in 194? (3, I think).

Of course, if my facts are wrong, the whole thing goes to he||.

Sounds basically right, unless I'm missing something. One question on #2 and #3: would any of the Pacific battles prior to the Allied landing at Africa or the air raids on Tokyo count as "invasions"? Also on #2, didn't we also land at the same time in (Morocco)?

Is there more to this quiz?--looks fun!

Exactly :) There are also some price guides online which approximate Overstreet values. Here's a reference which will give you some ballpark figures for at least some of what you mention (not sure if they'll list it all):

Heh, I can't hardly wait to go. Almost done with packing, just a few more boxes and I'll be set.

The ear is still uncomfortable. I may need to see the doctor tomorrow.
