The Hobbit Hole XII - Tree and flower and leaf and grass

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Tree and flower and leaf and grass

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

How were your meetings about meetings today? :-)

Far too intense. I have more action items that can be done in the time alloted. Something will fail to happen. I just don't know which thing yet.

"Define "traditional Arthur", please!"

I was hoping if it put it that way I could avoid having to define it :) I think of the traditional Arthur as everything from Marie de France, Yvain, and "Sir Gawain" up to Mallory. Non-traditional Arthur would be stuff that adds to the "Mallorian" tradition or departs from it significantly. In other words, did the film do something equivalent to "Troy" taking the gods out of Homer?--I guess that's what my fear is of seeing it.

On Arthur being Roman-Briton, the most convincing historical argument I've read so far (and I'm no expert on this) is Geoffrey Ashe's argument that Geoffrey of Monmouth's account of Arthur is based on one Riothamus, a British king who led an army into Gaul c. 469-470.

Saxons at Hadrian's Wall, eh? :) Well, hopefully they didn't cut out Merlin's final scene with the Scouring of the Shire or anything :)

So, did you clue the meeting in to this? Or are you gonna let 'em be surprised? :-)

No, they all still have to happen. There's no such thing as being too busy to take on new projects. Saying "no" is worse than saying "yes" and not getting it done...

I prefer the reconstructive history type stories. Not that I've found the perfect one yet. Keep certain elements - Excaliber, the round table, the knights (some of them; Lancelot's right out but Gawain, Gareth, Cai, Bors, Rhys Bedwyr, etcetera are more fun anyway) but don't make it high middle ages. It's the opening of the dark ages, fer cryin' out loud.

There is a big statue of Paul Bunyan in Shelton that leads the Paul Bunyan forest festival parade each year....

On a skateboard, even! That could give the kiddies nightmares!!

I couldn't find the movie shot. It's a stage production of "Fiddler on the Roof"

Hair knows what song they're singing...

"People don't think I'm funny in rl, either. I've got to develop a real sense of humor. See?"

If I didn't think you had a sense of humor I wouldn't have pinged you to the Monty Python thread earlier today :) You're plenty funny when you relax and let your brain play. A key to humor is to just let yourself go with spontaneous associations without worrying about whether anyone thinks they're funny or not. Watch any successful stand-up comedian and they do this. End of SNL pep talk :)

Yes, we were. And while RL was mostly good, I'm still inordinately depressed, and it's late, so I'd better go to bed - I've had to restrain myself three times already from saying something nasty to people who seriously don't deserve it.

Honestly, I know I was bad today, but you should see what I managed to censor.
