Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...That none have seen but we alone.

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

"And isn't there something in the Geneva Conventions about the song?"

There was, but then Bruce Dern blew up the Geneva Convention headquarters by flying the Good Year Blimp into it--oh, wait, that's Black Sunday. . .

Nah, we just call them things and sometimes it sticks... they each have their own nickname, too, for instance, the littlest guy is "Nutter".

"Weasels" came from somewhere but I forget where.

we'll drive by a feed store, and Hair will want to stop, just to look at stuff!

I totally understand that from the plant loving part of me. Sometimes feed stores have the coolest unusual plants. Different ones from the normal nurseries around. My absolute favorites are the little old out of the way places.

ROFL! He sounds like an ancestor of Weird Al Yankovich :)

I like that one! Reminds me of Nutter Butter cookies :)

Wind in the Willows, maybe? The sound also reminded me of the Weasleys--it gave me of an image of the Weasley brothers running around making mischief :)

Exactly! If you're not familiar with P.D.Q. Bach, it is similar to Wierd Al, but spoofing classical music. He was invented by Peter Schickele as the 21st of J.S. Bach's 20 children ("the last, and most certainly the least"), and Schickele "discovers" new works by him occassionally.

The Complete Works of P.D.Q. Bach (1807-1742)?

relevant mini-dramas

I don't think there have been any ~relevant~ mini dramas!

We're about to go to the feed store for supplies, clean the barn, that kind of thing.... same ole same old.... Oh - except the part where a whole bunch of company is coming and I have to get ready for that. That's new. ;~D

I haven't seen "Roger Rabbit" yet.

BTW, just noticed "Blues Brothers" is on AMC tonight, followed by "Silver Streak" with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor :)

"Nutter" is actually a family name. Our grandfather was doing research and turned up loads of "Nutters", not in the direct line, but great-great-great-uncles and such.

Oh oh... hope the company doesn't break the dishes and crack the plates!

I would tell you that some of the company could be put to work to help you get some of that getting ready done.... but I think others are arriving too soon for that. :-D

As for me, I think I'm going to be so antsy for the next couple of days that I will probably be little use for anything. I do have to work tomorrow. But, that is just counseling with some students who want to enroll for fall. Little thinking on that.

Sounds like interesting research. What ethnicity is the name?

Our family's been researching our genealogy for the past few years, too. So far we've gotten back to I think the 16th century on my Dad's side (Norwegian) and to the period of the English Civil War on my Mom's side (Irish), though in the latter case we have some gaps to fill in between the 17th and 19th centuries. Right now my Mom's helping research a 19th-century immigrants' house that's being restored for a local historical society that's making a sort of historical recreation museum depicting Wisconsin during that period.

LOL!
Didn't see that movie yet.
How horrible is that one?
As bad as Silent Running?

That one's actually a pretty good movie about a PLO terrorist plot to bomb the Super Bowl, written by Thomas Harris, the same guy who wrote Silence of the Lambs, and directed by John Frankenheimer, who directed some classics like The Manchurian Candidate. But it's funny watching it after Silent Running because Bruce Dern is in it and he's even crazier in it--he plays the lead terrorist, which seems to be a natural extension of his role in Silent Running :)

Uh... must be English, that's what we are. English on all sides with a tiny bit of German for flavor.

Yay, parents showed up so I get to see Riddick! Back with a report in a few hours.
